To Torrey, or not to Torrey

Smith is okay but I think his veteran presence is negated by Wright who seems to click better with Cam.

If we can get help on the squad by trading him it cutting then I think it’s a move we can handle. If not I’m too disappointed in keeping him as long as Byrd makes the cut.

Been saying it all summer, but these preseason games have verified it in my mind - let him go. Too expensive for a 4th or 5th option. If he isn't skilled enough to be 1 of our top 2 best WRs, you are hurting the team by keeping him.

I saw enough from Byrd last night to think he's made the roster. So that's 6 WR.

Now if we have to keep 11 OL due to injuries, how do we keep 6 WR?

My solution. 2 TEs + Armah, (plus a TE on PS and Manhertz starts season on the PUP).

Only other option is to skimp at some position on defense...

But yeah, we need 6 WRs.

Agree

You speak the gospel.

We will see what happens when the game time players separate from training warriors. Who is a gamer and who is a training warrior— we will see.

for now I’m all about keeping our new strength a strength— our offensive weapons.

Getting rid of Smith would be a mistake. First of all he is a fast deep route receiver and how many deep routes have we actually attempted? And was the preseason to showcase him or the younger guys who need the work. He will get his catches and show his worth. Until Byrd and Samuel show they can be durable it would be foolish to cut a proven commodity like Smith

Completely agree here, we have only seen preseason games. Unless the staff knows something we don’t, he isn’t going anywhere. You have finally given Cam some good weapons all over the field (RBs, WRs, TEs, and a versatile FB). Don’t screw this up. Haha!

Question...

As of right now is Torrey Smith a starter?

If not, do you pay a backup 8 million?

Um, not as play stands now. Samuels is making a heck of a case for starter duties. Moore has great potential (if he can keep it under 65 mph), Byrd makes a strong case for KR/PR bonus, Wright looks steady and honestly, I like Mose Frazier on the active roster.

I like Torrey, the guy has character all day long. Does he still have the speed and hands to make the cut, though? I'm not seeing him tear the coverage open anymore and he honestly seemed to disappear last night.

No, keep him.

Maybe Samuel should be no2 wr but he is not proven with performance or health.

Lets get into the regular season when reality hits.

I always looked at Torrey as a deep threat specialist. I never looked at him as the no1 wr. Ginn wasn't a no1 wr either, its just all Cam had.lol

Funchess is a no2 wr at best imo also.

Moore does not seem ready yet and Byrd really didn't show deep threat catches last year. Did he? Looks like he was more of a short to intermediate guy last year. I dont remember many straight deep 9 route catches that Byrd had  like Ginn. Correct me if im wrong.

I'd be very worried if we cut Torrey given Samuel and Byrd's past injuries. Speed guys always seem to have hammy issues, I'd rather not risk it. Skimp elsewhere if we have to. Torrey has valuable vet experience and two super bowl rings. I'd feel confident if we had to resort to use him rather than some emergency dude off the street.

FWIW, he had 1 reception during the 2017 preseason. I do not know how he has looked during training camp, but he has been impersonating the invisible man during the preseason games. Hopefully, his lack of production is simply a product of the fact that the Panthers have not thrown deep too often in the preseason.

Samuel should be WR1 and Funch WR2

Wright should come in and play the slot on 3 WR sets.

Torrey is clearly WR5 or WR6 after Moore.

This would be a major diss and for all we know Samuel is injury prone. If DJ or Curtis end up the #1 as the season progress fine, but to just give them the nod after some nice preseason games would be a complete slap in Funchess’s face. Smith is a veteran FA signing so they’re in no rush to get him warmed up.

Funchess

Smith

Samuel

Moore

Wright

4 and 5 will basically split time.
