To Torrey, or not to Torrey

I'm only for cutting him if we have the opportunity to add a better player at a position of more need. Given that we evidently didn't pursue Iloka who signed for peanuts, I'm guessing we're simply not interested in an upgrade at safety. So that pretty much leaves OL.

After what I saw from Donald Penn last night, we won’t be looking into his availability anytime soon. To call his performance “Kalil-like” would be too kind.

Success as a deep threat in the NFL has nothing to do with 40 times or combine athleticism. Wright has never in his career had success as a deep threat. He's always been a great possession guy, nothing more nothing less. Torrey has been one of the best deep threats in the league and it's his defined role.

Samuel and Byrd may at some point be able to fill the role and take over but neither has proved anything in real games and for a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations there's no reason at all to get rid of our only proven deep threat. Would be absolutely silly.

And no I don't even like him all that much, I would be thrilled if Samuel/Byrd stepped up so we could cut Torrey. Just haven't seen it from them yet and likely won't see it this season.

Smith's only been known as a deep threat.  He had a couple Ginn like seasons in Baltimore, got the Big contract in SF off of that.  There he showed what he has showed in games here.  He is nothing more than just going run a deep post Route.  They cut him.  He went to Philly where he was their #3 option, as that guy from the slot to just bomb it deep.  He was traded there because they had young talented WRs who can do the same as him and needed cap space (pretty much the same situation were in now)  Again Wright can do the same here, as can Moore, Samuel, and Byrd.

Wright like Cotchery can provide the vet presence.  What can Smith teach that Wright cant?

I can tell you Wright teach a couple things or 2 that Smith cant, and thats how to go through Norvs playbook.

And we have seen Byrd and Samuel begin to step up.  Samuel has had a he11 of a camp and looked d@m good in the preseason games.  Byrd who has been around here a bit has shown to.  When he got his shot late last year he showed he can be that deep guy prior to getting injured

I’m sorry y’all, have y’all not been watching the games. You see who starting that’s the starters. Curtis or Byrd haven’t or can’t stay healthy, so why cut Smith. DJ Moore is not ready , most WR start producing in Year 2 or 3. So if we cut Smith that would be foolish. Definitely to depend on 2 oft injured players. This is not even a debate in my opinion.

I'm pro Torrey and want to keep as many weapons as possible. The only reason I would be ok with losing him was if it turned on to a starting offensive lineman. That seems unlikely

I'm of the same mindset at this point. Initially I think most of us came to that knee jerk reaction of cutting him, I know I did. The playbook hasn't even been cracked opened yet so let's wait and see.

I say keep to mitigate injury risk to young injury prone wrs. Cut him next year when Moore is Moore developed. Think CS has looked better than every other wr besides funchess though and should be starting. Funchess CS Wright starting 3 rotate smith and Moore in. Agree with others Moore needs to learn how to beat press coverage

Aight, I gotcha.

That being said, I don't think we will cut him.

Honestly, I think the problem with the "if we cut him, someone else will pick him up" argument is that this is also true of the younger receivers, one of whom might end up being cut if they decide to keep Torrey.

Smith being scooped up by another team doesn't really worry me that much. Even at his best, he's only got a year, two at the most.

Another team picking up a young player like Damiere Byrd and getting him to play to his potential? I find that way scarier.

We’re not cutting Byrd or Samuel regardless.

If there is an offensive line upgrade out there he is the obvious candidate to open up some needed cap space.

If we are going to have to cut Byrd to keep Smith I will be pissed. Byrd is far and away our best return man and that is very valuable to a team notorious for poor special teams play.

I remember Ginn being a headache when he first showed up in Carolina,..it was really later that he got in tune with Cam and became such a contributor. He seems to be a hot and cold player,...

Also, with the injury bug in full force right now, should we really dump players right now?  Cut Torrey and he pulls a Ginn somewhere else, Curtis and Byrd get hurt again, and then what do we do?

Torrey has not made a case for himself on the field this preseason for sure. And I know his contract makes him a tempting cut.

But we saw how quickly 1 or 2 injuries to WRs can hurt us. I can't fully trust Byrd or Samuel will stay healthy.

My vote is to keep 6, including Smith. Keep him inactive if necessary if Samuel and Byrd are producing. Expensive backup, but valuable in many ways.
