Preseason Game 3 - Winners/Losers

Winners

Offensive line: Credit where it’s due—this patchwork line actually did a great job at keeping Cam Newton upright and giving him time to make plays. They even overcame adversity when Jeremiah Sirles went down to a hamstring injury early in the first half that forced Blaine Clausellto step in at right tackle. I know it’s just the preseason, but I was very pleased with what I saw out of the offensive line.

Cam Newton: Cam had a good night, going 11-for-17 for 142 yards, and he somehow survived that scary dive where he landed on his head/neck in the first quarter. It’s the preseason, Cam. Don’t do things like that. We can’t handle it.

Taylor Heinicke: He won the No. 2 quarterback job tonight if you asked me. He was the one asked to come into the game during Cam’s concussion scare, and then when he played in the third quarter he did an excellent job moving the offense. He made some great throws (especially that one to Curtis Samuel) and also showed his mobility on his touchdown run. A solid performance like that is how you make you case that you deserve a spot, and I think Heinicke did exactly that.

Cameron Artis-Payne: A solid showing from CAP tonight is exactly what he needed to show the coaches that he had something to offer this team if he was included in the 53-man roster. He ran with a purpose tonight and it showed. I think he penciled himself on the final roster and it’s now his spot to lose.

Curtis Samuel: Samuel had some great catches last night and showed his ability to pick up yardage when given space to work with. He stretched out and made a great catch on a pass from Heinicke that set up the Panthers’ first touchdown in the second half. He’s quickly moving up the depth chart with each passing game.

Honorable mention (written by Brian Beversluis):

Colin Jones: THE ACE THAT RUNS THE PLACE. Fumble recovery? Check. Cementing his spot on the roster? Check.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton looked very good on the night, completing 11-of-17 passing attempts for 142 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. In two quarters of action, he completed passes to five different receivers, with the only drawback being that they were unable to finish any of the drives with touchdowns, settling for field goals. One of his best throws of the night came on a nicely timed back-shoulder pass to wide receiver Devin Funchess.

Carolina’s defense was solid against the run, holding the Patriots to only 60 yards on 19 carries. They also forced Tom Brady to work the underneath game, limiting the Patriots’ biggest offensive play through the air to 16 yards. Though the Panthers defense got worked over in the second quarter, they were able to get out of the half surrendering only three points.

Linebacker Luke Kuechly looked good in coverage, breaking up a pass on a key third down. However, the Panthers defense missed some assignments in coverage that resulted in wide open receivers, though the Patriots failed to capitalize.

Ryan kalil was garbage most of the night. He gave up the pressure on the play where cam had to scramble out the pocket and got flipped on his head, also gave up some pressures in the 2 minute drill. He has not looked worth 10 million dollars for one season.

Moton is easily the biggest winner and probably the player of preseason. People dont know how hard it is to find a RT and LT. He has looked more than great playing both!!!!! That's crazy! Never let Kalil come back EVER. Hopefully Tepper/ and or Norv steps in if Ron tries to do something stupid.

Roten, and Sirles/Clausell looked great also. Big winners. This Oline has showed promise when it looked like it was going to be a complete disaster.

Mike Adams showed up. That's big because again we all think safety will be a weak area. Have not noticed much from a FS yet though.

Jackson is lookin better than expected. Hopefully he has a standout rookie season like Marcus Peters.

I acknowledge Cam had a great game because the huddle would have been talking WAY more if he was bad...LOL The front 4(Addison, Short with pressure all night) and the linebackers look scary again when they are playing at their best. Shaq might break out, Luke  concussions didn't change his fearlessness and Davis is playing with a chip on his shoulder for obvious reasons.

I don't have any percentages or hard data, but I assume part of the reason that our LBs have been dominating is that we're blitzing less?  I do think Wilks' aggressiveness hurt the play of the defense last year.

WINNERS

- Curtis Samuel, 3 catches for 58 yards

- Mose Frazier, won't make our team but has put some good things on tape. another team might claim him after cuts.

- Lorenzo Doss, 8 tackles and tackle for loss. Looks like he's now ahead of LaDarius Gunter. It's Doss/Seymour/Gunter for the 5th CB spot

- Bryan Cox, 2 tackles tonight but what was most telling was that he played ahead of Daeshon Hall.

LOSERS

- Torrey Smith, targetted twice and held without a catch. We're not going to cut him but he may be better as our #3 WR instead of #2

- DJ Moore, didn't look terribly impressive out there tonight and hasn't the past 2 games.

- Heinicke/Gilbert, both threw for 46 yards, neither has truly looked great

What is wrong with DJ Moore ever since he got in trouble with law hasn't look good at all?
