Preseason Game 3 - Winners/Losers

Three who mattered

Taylor Moton, Greg Van Roten: Both fill-in offensive linemen had a solid outing on Friday night. Moton played his first game at left tackle, with starter Matt Kalil out with a knee injury, while Van Roten had his second start at left guard.

The two opened several nice holes for McCaffrey, who rushed for 42 yards in the first quarter and usually to the left side. Van Roten also sprang McCaffrey loose on an 18-yard run by executing three downfield blocks after helping open the initial gap.

Can some explain why Torrey Smith couldn’t figure out where to,line up on multiple plays.  WTF I thought he was a savvy vet.  He has no timing with Cam.  Should have caught that deep ball if he would have looked for it. Had a drop.  He was terrible.

I really don't see how you keep him over Byrd. Both are not great but one is a good return man. Funch, Wright, and Samuel should be your starters with Moore, Frazier and Byrd as your back ups. Smith is just in the way of playing time of younger guys if you ask me.

Carefuel bud...they will call you a racist.

Jk...I agree 100%. No way I cut 1 of of our young talented WRs to keep OG TS at $5 million. Said it all summer. If we only keep 5 WRs, Smith better watch out...heck, maybe even if we keep 6.

WINNERS

- Curtis Samuel, 3 catches for 58 yards

- Mose Frazier, won't make our team but has put some good things on tape. another team might claim him after cuts.

- Lorenzo Doss, 8 tackles and tackle for loss. Looks like he's now ahead of LaDarius Gunter. It's Doss/Seymour/Gunter for the 5th CB spot

- Bryan Cox, 2 tackles tonight but what was most telling was that he played ahead of Daeshon Hall.

LOSERS

- Torrey Smith, targetted twice and held without a catch. We're not going to cut him but he may be better as our #3 WR instead of #2

- DJ Moore, didn't look terribly impressive out there tonight and hasn't the past 2 games.

- Heinicke/Gilbert, both threw for 46 yards, neither has truly looked great

Agree with all but Heinicke. He came in suddenly when Cam went under the tent, kept the drive going. Looked pretty unflappable.  I'd say that was a huge checkmark in the column of what you want to see in a backup QB. Was very impressed.

My full list of who impressed.

Among the younger guys, who helped their chances:

Moton, Van Roten, Samuel, Heinicke

Bryan Cox, Elder, Doss.

The starters who it was great to see have an excellent game:

Cam, Luke, CMC, Wright, Shaq, KK, Olsen, Mario, Funchess.

That's a pretty nice list of old and young guys who showed up. Fun game!

Now for the guys that struggled / hurt their chances:

CAP. He flashed some, but I just don't think there's space on the roster for him. CMC, CJ and Barner should be enough. Hood to PS.

Moore & Smith. Disappointing game for both, but I do think both will be important contributors. I'm ok if Smith only gets limited targets as long as Samuel is healthy. But keep him. Let's not cut the depth we worked so hard to finally obtain.

Hall. I'll need to rewatch 4th q as I was sleepy and my internet was a bit choppy. But did he get playing time or make plays? I'm thinking he could be someone we want to stash on PS so maybe limit his exposure?

Seymour. By not playing (due to a root canal) he's at big risk of losing his spot in the depth chart. Elder and Doss may both be ahead of him now...

Winners:  OK offensive line, wow.  There were times when Cam had forever to throw the ball.  Moton looked awesome, as did the rest of the line.  CMC broke tackles and had a great game.  Cam played well too...gave us a scare with that flip for first down...

Defense was excellent.  Keeping Brady to field goals is not easy.  Jackson with the hit to force the punt.  I believe we have our number 2 corner.  He has impressed all preseason and training camp.

Byrd and Samuel keep impressing.

Losers:

The patriots, as it should be.

Torry Smith did not look good...and his contract is very favorable to us.  I know its preseason, but he needs to start showing something or he's not going to last the season.  We could use that money to get an offensive lineman.

Bradberry did not look good.  When he gave that 10+ yard cushion on 3rd and long resulting in a 1st down, I was incensed.  Jackson actually looked better last night.

Matt Kahlil, he didn't play, and we didn't miss him.
