Funch Featured on Film Don’t Lie

Thought this was interesting for those of us who don’t necessarily know what to look for with respect to good route running.

Personally, I think Funchess has grown a lot since his rookie year, but he was called out in this episode for running a bad/sloppy route against the Vikings last season. The whole video is pretty good I think, but Funch is featured at the 13.13 second mark.

*Also, sorry about the error in the title (ok should be on). I hate when autocorrect changes words that are spelled correctly.

He definitely seems to struggle to play to his size in a lot of situations. I don't like the PG comparison. In basketball terms, I think he's the 6'11" kid who needs to be in the post but fancies himself a three point shooting SF. Funchess is a big possession receiver but seems like he wants to play a finesse game.

I don't know why people insist on Funchess changing his play style. Not every big WR has to be a jump ball specialist who uses his body to "box out" defenders. Funchess prefers to use his quickness and agility to get his big frame around a defender. Maybe he'll come down with less balls, but there will be potential for more YAC. Not every receiver can be everything, Randy Moss didn't really use his size to "body" defenders much, he just ran right past them and outreached them for the ball. This guy was on his way to a Pro Bowl caliber season before the shoulder injury, he could be on the cusp of a huge breakout season.

I would agree with you if Funchess was a strong YAC WR. He's not.

I think he proved himself as a solid starting WR last season but I definitely think he could be even better if he made better use of his frame.

I dunno how you define "strong YAC WR", but he did have 284 YAC last year, which was about a third of his total receiving yards.

Funchess isn’t quick enough to beat the better corners because of his size and needs to use his size. It’s not often a 6’4” 225 dude is going to out quick a smaller corner so it’s a must for him to use his size.

Randy Moss was capable of catching the ball over his shoulder, Funchess rarely has shown the ability to do such. So many of you don’t realize that Funchess is very limited with the routes he can run because he needs to be able to see the ball into his hands from QB’s hand. So streaks and corner routes you can essentially eliminate right away. Post and slants are his better ones because he’s able to see the ball into his hands.

In the clip above he allows Rhodes to make a play on that ball because he starts to drift which he often does too.

Funchess really hasn’t progressed as much as some here think he has. Of course his stats have improved but he’s constantly doing it with the same routes and he hasn’t expanded his game which is the issue.

I agree with you but inherently if you are an NFL WR you are going to have to battle DBs for contested balls and it's disappointing to see Funch get outmanned in those situations

    • So this has been one of my biggest concerns with Canales and it's the downside of having some young offensive guy who doesn't have full staff control. like what is the org chart for this decision?  With canales, who does he know or has worked with that he can tap? He hasn't been in Seattle in 2 seasons and all those guys are gone anyway. He wasn't even that high up on the org chart in Seattle so it's unclear who he would have regularly interacted with. QB coaches generally aren't going to be in the split squad meetings, at least not regularly. Just glancing at the coaching staff, Clint Hurt jumps out. He was DC in 2022 and is currently the dline coach in Philadelphia, but that team is the brainchild of roseman and i'd be very hesitant to bring in someone who was allowed to walk from seattle and would be having a SUBSTANTIAL decline in talent here in Carolina. With Tampa, that defense is a shambles and fans want Bowles out. It's a very top heavy coaching staff too; Bowles is very involved so there isn't some bright up and comer, from what Bucs fans elsewhere have said. Someone from the Bills maybe? Morgan was last there in 2020. Who could he call? No one established is going to take that position for a few reasons. There very little talent on that side of the ball, so you're not getting the rockstar mercenaries to come here. They're probably going to struggle to bring in some hot up and comer, since anyone with ambition is going to see how Tepper handled evero's request to interview for other positions and not want to deal with that. That's a problem the team has created on its own and I don't know how to fix it until they have someone leave for a promotion, which is going to be difficult with how dogshit this franchise is. And then, any agent is going to tell their client that the Panthers let the whole defense eat poo heading into 2023 just to "give bryce weapons." they let two starters walk and traded away a third. who would want to come in to this? how are you going to build/retain talent? There's only a few logical possibilities from my perspective 1. Someone out of nowhere who just crushes their interview 2. Someone from a good defense promoted WAY earlier than they should be and you just hope for the best 3. Extend Evero. I know a lot of people hate this but I think it's going to be the best option. This is the problem with Canales as coach. I don't want to go into what I think about the offense in this post, today or as it projects, but it's just not going to be easy for him to assemble a staff, if he even has the power to do so. For all we know Morgan is handling all defensive positions and hires. unclear org charts are a hallmark sign of a poorly run organization. I dunno. i think it's lowkey the biggest problem on the team, even moreso than the QB position.
