What’s your solution to the tackle situation?

Whichever way we want to play it, there is one way that I'm 100% against.

Going all in on 1/2 seasons.

We have a franchise QB who "should" be entering his prime..he's only 29.  He should play a minimum of 6 more seasons.  I'm not at all interested in going "all in" when we have more time, and that direction likely blows up in your face anyway.

The Saints finally started being smart last season, and beat our asses 3 times, and should have been in the NFC Championship game.  The NFC is just too deep to try the all in method.

To add, if we were to go with an all in season, I want it further down the road, and for us to have a legit GM when and if that happens.

Draft picks are what you build the core of your team on and also allow you to have access to much, much, much cheaper roster options. They have some pretty serious value, even though they can obviously be squandered as we have many under Hurney and DG. I like Penn as an option but the question is what we decide to do moving forward and how much draft capital we have to give up to obtain him. Penn probably has 2-3 seasons left in the tank, at best. He is only under contract through 2019. His 2019 cap figure is going to be a bit high, however, especially with so much money already invested in Matt Kalil. So unless we plan on making him a starter at LT or RT for the next 2-3 seasons(and then extending his contract). One thing we don't know is what the coaching staff and front office has in mind for Daryl Williams and Taylor Moton moving foward. Are they our future at RT/LT? Are we going to extend Williams? If the answer is no, maybe Penn is worth quite a bit more.

I do remember being firmly in the Whitworth camp when we signed Speed Bump, so I am not against bringing in an older guy like Penn. I just don't want to see us sell the farm and end up with another panicked Hurney move. Remember those under Hurney 1.0. Not pretty.

If Penn could give us 2 or even 3 years you absolutely do it then imo.

I was in the Whitworth camp as well (I was the one driving:shades:) and the most common argument against him was that he’d only give us 2 to 3 years of service. Well those 2 to 3 years of good service look REAL good right now up against the 1 year of crap and now whatever this knee thing is with Kalil.

2-3 years of even average tackle play would be hard for me not to take over a draft pick made by Hurney or Gettleman.

I don’t expect Williams to be signed long term and also expect Kalil to be cut after this year so that’s why I’m also very for this scenario and willing to give up some draft picks

Keep Moton on the right and breathe easy about that side of the line.  Find some athletic enough tackle in a trade or final cuts and park him on the left until Kalil comes back.  Send tons of help his way.  Should probably continue doing that once Kalil returns too.

Indeed. Penn is not nearly the caliber of player Whitworth was but if it could be arranged for a reasonable price and with a contract extension, I am all for getting someone to be a solid option at LT. Maybe the best option we have had since Gross retired.

Who knows? Maybe we will see it happen.....

I think you have to slide Moton to the left. Patchwork RT and move on. We are likely to lose a bunch of games either way. I mean we are no worse than Bell/Nate Chandler situation.

This^  Best case, Moton surprises everyone and plays very well on the left and maybe we find a cut that can handle the right.  Maybe some veteran who makes a little too much gets released in favor or a younger guy.

I don't really see us trading for anyone like Penn.  Why would the Raiders even do that?  Think about it this way, what would you be wiling to take to give up Williams before he was hurt.  Personally it would take a lot for me to give a starting tackle right before the season.

If anything I could see a trade for a younger backup before that.  Some guy you maybe had rated fairly high during a draft that is now stuck on someone's depth chart.

Play max protect

That is kind of what scares me.  I could see our coaches going run, run, max protect pass.  So what will end up happening is Cam will be stuck in a lot of 3rd and longs and taking coverage sacks because we have 3 receivers trying to get open against 6 defenders.

Maybe we should throw more on first down, when the defense has to respect the run.  Maybe we move the pocket more.  Maybe we play more 2 TE sets.

Maybe in the future we draft more tackles.  Its to the point I wouldn't care if the team drafted one offensive lineman in the first 3 rounds every year whether we needed it or not. Just seems like the hardest position to "fix".

If we are gonna throw it deep the coaches should know by now that Kalil needs help, that’s what was frustrating last preseason game. They continued to send out 5 knowing the play design

Are you sure about that? I think that might be the case if it were a retirement prior to June 1 but I don't think that is the case now.

In general a retirement works similarly to a cut.  Once a player is placed on the reserve/retired list the NFL treats him as if he was released. If I'm reading their chart correctly, Over the cap shows 5.9 million in dead money and a 1 million cap savings.
