What’s your solution to the tackle situation?

It’s no secret we’re desperate and there’s real no way we’re digging ourselves out of this mess without getting fleeced. It’s what happens when you make horrible decisions in FA.

Of course we could just sit back and work with what we have instead of overpaying but you’re kidding yourself if you think that’ll turn out to be anything less than a complete disaster.

If Hurney can find a willing trade partner even if it’s Oakland for Donald Penn who is likely only going to play this season and mayyyybe next, I’m all for it.

But the price has to be right for that to happen. Penn's contract basically makes him a one year rental and giving up a draft pick that could be a potentially serviceable and affordable player for 3-5 years for a one year stop gap player in an ALREADY injury plagued offseason is not a long term success strategy. It's honestly not reasonable to trade anything more than a 6th round pick for him and we don't know if that is possible or not.

On paper it seems like a good idea but we have to keep in mind that our personnel decisions have to be with an eye for the long term as well. We aren't exactly in a "win now" mode. Close but not to the level where we need to make desperation moves.

If we do trade anything, I'm shopping Butler for an OT prospect.

Bulter is too valuable as a depth guy. Love is a FA next year and Butler is locked in for a very affordable price. Trading him to apply a half assed Band Aid is not a great idea.

Teams don't trade tackles, they are just too hard to come by.  That leaves us with pulling someone off the couch, and waiting for cuts.

Any tackle that gets cut is not going to be starter material, because starting quality tackles don't get cut, just like they don't get traded.

We are in a pickle.  Simply having Moton makes this situation better than all we had was Bell and Remmers, but their is no magic solution here.

We're going to have to suck it up.

The only possible solution is to call Oher.  He should be healthy if he'd risk another concussion.  That's all I got.

Ah this is where I’m going to have to disagree with you and it’s why imo we always come up short.

We’re constantly saying this very thing and it hasn’t paid off. Years ago it was we need to save draft picks while watching DG piss them all away come every April. I get that we can’t have all-pros at every position but every year we’re trotting out legit bums at a position or two and it always ends up burning us.

At some point you need to make some moves that could end up being difference makers. If Penn can come in and give Cam some peace of mind on his blindside the sky is the limit.

Obviously we’re not going to see eye to eye on this one and this is a topic that people could go back and forth on all day so we’ll just have to agree to disagree

Calling Oher is not a solution at all. The man retired due to a concussion that he could not recover from. He would be foolish to come back and we would be foolish to attempt to bring him back. We are better off gambling on roster cuts or street free agents.

As crappy as it is having question marks at 2 out of 5 spots on the line (3 if you're confident in Moton) up in the air, I am excited at how this is going to give Moton more snaps to accelerate his growth and development. I know that we need to be focused on now, but I am excited for the future should we be able to keep DWill and he perform at the level has has been. If that's how it goes, we're looking at Turner/Williams/Moton on the line and whomever replacing the Kalils. Good bit of cap space opening up with a center not costing $10M to have durability concerns.

I've got a solution

Lets wait till we lose a regular season game first before everyone loses their poo.    Starting a average/below average LT shouldn't sink the entire ship.  If that's the case, then our coaches suck.

It's not just the concern at LT, but also a very much unknown at LG... and the high likelihood that Ryan Kalil ends up getting injured again at some point this season.

Short answer? You better hope Moton can hold it down on the left and one of the current roster guys steps up on the right to hold it down until the season is over.  Because that's really the only option available at this point.  Let's pray that Williams come back 100% soon and no one else gets hurt because another injury and a winning season much less any playoff hopes are out the window.

run game looked pretty good against the fins.   If we can get a consistent line together, I feel like they'll overachieve.  Getting matt back is actually important.  Everyone likes to dog him but honestly that's our guy and he's all we've got lol

Draft picks are what you build the core of your team on and also allow you to have access to much, much, much cheaper roster options. They have some pretty serious value, even though they can obviously be squandered as we have many under Hurney and DG. I like Penn as an option but the question is what we decide to do moving forward and how much draft capital we have to give up to obtain him. Penn probably has 2-3 seasons left in the tank, at best. He is only under contract through 2019. His 2019 cap figure is going to be a bit high, however, especially with so much money already invested in Matt Kalil. So unless we plan on making him a starter at LT or RT for the next 2-3 seasons(and then extending his contract). One thing we don't know is what the coaching staff and front office has in mind for Daryl Williams and Taylor Moton moving foward. Are they our future at RT/LT? Are we going to extend Williams? If the answer is no, maybe Penn is worth quite a bit more.

I do remember being firmly in the Whitworth camp when we signed Speed Bump, so I am not against bringing in an older guy like Penn. I just don't want to see us sell the farm and end up with another panicked Hurney move. Remember those under Hurney 1.0. Not pretty.
