A Starting Safety Has Hit The Market - Bengals Releasing S George Iloka

If it's a multiyear offer, we have a chance...  could add more money in the 2nd year to try to make the offer more competitive, considering the other interested teams could offer more in the first...  but honestly, we have a swrious chance, if interested.  He was scheduled to make 7M this year and they released him.  He's not going to make more than 7M with any team that signs him now, guys released for financial reasons rarely ever make the the same when signed elsewhere...  so the 6M we have available this year should be very competitive.

I wouldn't call Boston quality looking back at his one good season, he benefited from having probably the best CB core/pass rush combo in the NFL and allowed him to capitalize a lot more and have a good season.

There's not a lot of teams that can give him the same supporting cast like Chargers

It spoke volumes that the team he had his "breakout" year with was in need of a safety and still let him walk.

I don't know what football you've been watching, but Reid is a legit starter, and is better than Iloka.

Yes he is. Iloka has lost a step he couldn’t afford to. It showed in coverage. And since he doesn’t really play to his size, I’d pass right now. Unless we are upgrading our coverage at Safety, I’d just stand pat and pray Gaulden picks things up.

He’ll get paid his $6 mill from Cincy this year right?

He could go for the min to a contender

Not how it works. Any cap hit for Cincy is from old bonus checks. He’s not making anything until he signs with a team.

Reid naturally is a FS though. I dont know too much about this guy, but can he come down and hit? Did he lose a step or just said fug it cause he played on the garbage bengals?

It all comes down to value for me. I just had to address LG's comments. I mean, I understand if people don't want Reid for obvious reasons, but he's probably a top 15 safety in the league. He's a better run stopper than coverage guy, but he's not chopped liver there either. He's overall been pretty good, even exceptional at times, and his best years may be ahead of him if he ever gets back on the field. But don't tell.me that Iloka is better or even had the upside that Reid had when each guy first entered the league because it's just not true. There is really no question about it.

I’d much rather have Reid at SS playing closer to the line. Just don’t see him as a center fielder or the speed to keep up deep with WRs. Iloka needs to be used the same way. But he lacks Reid’s speed and athleticism. Of course over half of the time I’ve watched Iloka, it’s been against the Steelers. So that’s a tough offense to look good against. Still wish we could have snagged Bates or Justin Reid. Not a complaint, because I’m happy with Jackson, and Bates and Reid were both gone by the time we took Gaulden. Who has potential even if it takes awhile.
