Christian McCaffery looked in midseason form flashing his speed on a 71-yard touchdown run via a well blocked power play early in the game. He showed quickness and power of his own in between the tackles on inside zone runs as well. However, Cam Newton struggled at times including throwing an interception on a coverage misread on a crossing route. To be fair he was also under pressure a bit in the pocket as Carolina’s pass-blocking struggled at times with the Miami pass-rush, including several easy wins against Matt Kalil.

Daeshon Hall had a solid game as a pass-rusher and his most important play was when he hit Fales as he threw early in the fourth quarter. That pass ended up behind the receiver and was intercepted. He also executed a textbook stunt late in the first half which ended up allowing Efe Obada to loop free, combining to force a throw away.

Corn Elder played the most snaps on the Panthers defense and was solid the entire game. His outstanding interception early in the fourth quarter was the play that really stood out even though the pass was behind the receiver, he still tipped it up with his left hand and then swatted it back to himself with his right before grabbing the interception. Elder also forced a fumble and shot into the backfield for a tackle for loss in the game.

Good point on Hall, didn't record a tackle but had 2 QB hits

  • WINNERS

- Curtis Samuel, 2 catches 65 yards, once again looking like a difference maker

- McCaffrey/Kenjon Barner, both looked shifty and electric out there. Barner is a nice player bc he can be a receiving threat at RB and PR/KR

- Jared Norris, 5 tackles and was very active at LB and special teams. We would probably keep him over Ben Jacobs at this point

- Corn Elder, 4 tackles and an INT, looks like he can contribute as our #4 CB

- Alex Armah, outstanding tonight. Might be best FB we've had since Brad Hoover

  • LOSERS

- Matt Kalil, we all saw it, very bad performance

- Brendan Mahon, looked solid out there but hurt his leg and did not finish the game

- Da'Norris Searcy, terrible head to head tackle attempt that lead to a concussion. Might have just lost his job to Gaulden

- Taylor Heinicke, 5/9  88 yards is less than impressive. Had a clear opportunity to win backup QB job, did not take advantage

Kalil looked bad a couple times but it's tough seeing a guy like Robert Quinn the 2nd week of preseason. We dont have a pass rusher like him that could've prepared Kalil for the first couple series. It's not like he was playing some scrub.

Once the season gets going and game planning is involved Matt will be better.

Heinicke didn't have a chance to win the job any more than Gilbert did. That battle is still up in the air.

Would rather have Heinicke due to his mobility and the ability to continue running the offense. Gilbert would require tweaking which would be less than ideal.

Elder really flashed on screen.  He may be developing into something to keep an eye on.

After the pick they cut to the sideline to show a dejected Captain Munnerlyn.   I really wish someone would beat Captain out for that third spot.

Pretty much agree with this list. I had hopes that Kalil would be better this year, and he still may be (not a high bar to cross), but he looked really bad. Miami did run way more blitzes than I'm sure our OL expected, but they generally held up well against those. Kalil just got beat badly by speed rushes. Given, Quinn is a beast, but Kalil barely got a hand on him.

I'd be interested in seeing what Moton can do at LT and Sirles at RT. I'm not on the "cut Kalil" bandwagon, since that's not really feasible at this point. Our vanilla offense looked pretty damn good outside of Kalil and one bad misread by Cam. Of course, our depth guys looked pretty bad too, so I'm not sure what's up with our tackles. Moton looked pretty solid, but he was the only one. Mahon looked pretty good until he got hurt. He's played tackle before...hell, I wouldn't mind giving him a shot at RT and moving Moton over to LT. Moton certainly has the feet for it.

It's frustrating to think of the possibilities that we could have with this offense if we just had average LT play. Maybe Kalil just had a really bad night and will play better during the season. At this point, I guess we have to hope that's the case...that or someone cuts a pretty decent LT to save a bit of money...though I'm not sure how financially we could sign a decent LT at this point.

Winner: Norv Turner....knock on wood but we have yet to have a delay of game penalty or have to burn a timeout due to calling the play in last second ala Shula.

It still amuses me how people think Shula was doing this against the desires of Ron Rivera.

Narrator: He wasn’t.

This

With Byrd added to winners. Everytime he kick returns, feel like he can take one to the house.

Samuel and Byrd on the field together is fun to watch

Defensive line techniques alignments in 3rd quarter was fantastic
