Torrey Smith shows leadership

We probably will end up keeping him, and I don't have a problem with that.  But for this year, he is our highest paid receiver,  and he is paid well above average for NFL receivers.  I think he might be the fifth highest paid receiver in the NFC south, only behind Sanu, Jones, Jackson, and Evans.

As for all NFL receivers, his salary cap cost is 40th on the list. Hardly a big number.

It's more to being a deep threat than just having 4.2/4.3 speed. So I agree that Torrey needs to stay cause he is proven and has a better track record than when they took a chance on Ginn.

Hopefully he doesn't have the long drops in crunch time.....he should be okay. We'll see. Cam loves to bomb those passes and he is probably the best deep thrower in the league.

Torrey has not played a real down for us yet, but most things point to Torrey being a Panther for life. He may be the best Hurney acquisition since Olsen. I just have a strange feeling he will be a long term panther. I see Torrey playing the Slot, and Y positions. I do see him having a really good year for us offensively. Bringing leadership to the WR core is essential for our success, much like Cotchery did for us on our 2015 Super Bowl run.

not a knock on Torrey but I think CJ Anderson will be the better acquisition.

We got a host of dudes that can play the slot ahead of Torrey  (slot isn't really his thing to begin with) and for the first time in a long time we got a lot of actual speed at WR.   I mean if he can just come in and catch a couple Ginn deep balls he will be well worth it.  But I don't expect big things from Torrey outside of mentoring and playing a small role deep.

500 yards, 3 TDs?

Perfect example of how looking at stats without applying context isn't a good idea.  Do we need Torrey to put up the stats he did in '13 with the Ravens?  Absolutely not, we have too much talent to expect that.

@jtm said it best, "We just need him to get 400-500 yards and help move the chains on 3rd down and mentor our young WR talent.  Between CMC, Funchess, Samuel, Olsen, and Moore . . . how many looks do you really think Smith will get?"

A WR isn't "pretty much done as a player" just because they don't reach 1K receiving yards.  Teams do need competent # 2's, 3's, and 4's in this league.....not to mention he's shown the ability to stay healthy over the course of his career thus far.  That alone is a pretty big deal imho.

I never said he needs to get 1K yards or even implied anything close to that..

just because some of us think he's in the twilight of his career - Which his numbers DO project - ya'll catch some feelings over a player that hasn't even played a single down for us yet?

ya'll some damn females in here.. how bout we wait til he shows us something before we put a superman cape on and ride out for this dude

No one's doing that

No one will even argue against the fact he's in the back part of his career

But your exact words were

"is it just me or is Torrey Smith pretty much done as a player??

I figured when we traded Worley for him - it was more of us trying to get rid of Worley than really wanting Smith.. "

then when people say "no he's gonna be a solid guy for us"  and "you're looking at stats with no context" you do this.

his numbers have drastically gone down since his time in B-more.. with DJ, Samuel and Byrd (all burners) waiting in the wings - i'd figure we need another possession receiver.. his contract is up after next year and i think that's when his time will be over with us.. could be wrong thou

Sorry to turn this into a Torrey bashing but I love what he did with the kids.. amazing

Well, he did have Gabbert and Kaepernick throwing him the ball in San Fran, so it is hard to be successful with those bums throwing you the ball.

Depends what you are expecting out of Torrey. If you are expecting a 1,000 yard receiver, then you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a guy who will stretch the field, open up the run and short passing game for our other players, and get between 35-45 receptions for about 500 yards (just like Ginn did for us), then I think you will be pleased.

right...... i truly don't see the problem with what i said....

Others were really bashing him.. i think im being honest about my expectations..
"pretty much done" = he's got a lil left in the tank and we hope to maximize that.. 2 more years on his contract, if he gives us a few hundred yards each year and a handful of TDs.. awesome..

I don't think he's washed by any means...

i think it was obviously the RIGHT move considering Worley's dumbass - but I just don't think he's gunna be a lifelong Panther like some on here are claiming he shud be.. he hasnt played a game yet.. Im just reserving judgement - but if i had to bet my house on him being a major factor this year - na..
