I'm sorry if this was posted before, but I don't remember seeing it.

Panthers WR Torrey Smith has inspiring impromptu meeting with youth group as camp ends

Torrey has not played a real down for us yet, but most things point to Torrey being a Panther for life. He may be the best Hurney acquisition since Olsen. I just have a strange feeling he will be a long term panther. I see Torrey playing the Slot, and Z positions. I do see him having a really good year for us offensively. Bringing leadership to the WR core is essential for our success, much like Cotchery did for us on our 2015 Super Bowl run.

is it just me or is Torrey Smith pretty much done as a player??

I figured when we traded Worley for him - it was more of us trying to get rid of Worley than really wanting Smith.. 

his numbers have drastically gone down since his time in B-more.. with DJ, Samuel and Byrd (all burners) waiting in the wings - i'd figure we need another possession receiver.. his contract is up after next year and i think that's when his time will be over with us.. could be wrong thou

on the field he sucks. might make 1 or 2 plays a year that make people think "does he still have it." well, he doesnt. but, there are worse guys to have on your team and I do think in the NFL you need leaders and not a bunch of divas.

Problem is with a coach like Rivera, he's likely to block a more talented rookie's playing time.

That happens a LOT under Rivera.

I don't get all the bashing. For example what did Ginn do in San Francisco? Nothing until he came here. Why? You need a QB with a good deep ball to feed fast receivers running deep downfield. Smith didn't put up bug yards in a WCO featuring short passes and counting on YAC. That isn't his game. But the Coryell system is a much better fit and he will prosper in this system. It isn't who they played for as much as fitting their skills into the right scheme.

No it doesn't. They play when they are ready. Rivera has been more willing to.play rookies than many coaches. If I remember correctly we started more rookies in the Superbowl than any team to that point.

Panthers essentially gave up nothing to get Smith and are paying him peanuts by WR standards.  People here act like we need Smith to have a 1,000 yard season.  We just need him to get 400-500 yards and help move the chain on 3rd down and mentor our young WR talent.  Between CMC, Funchess, Samuel, Olsen, and Moore . . . how many looks do you really think Smith will get?

He's essentially an experienced role player and the hate here is unreal.  Also, it appears that he is okay in this role and isn't going to be a diva for targets like many of the free agent targets many here wanted (ie. Crabtree).  Don't minimize the importance of someone willing to allow our young WR talent be the focus.

Huge difference in your hand being forced for whatever reason, lack of FAs, injuries or even a lack of coaching ability for certain players. In that regard Rivera does not. He is known to prefer the vet, ‘it’s his job to lose’ vs. taking a gamble. Rivera is convservative when it comes to personnel, plenty of examples of that and it’s well know to be his style.
