Panthers already have 5 locks at wide receiver, and Byrd ain't one of them.

Awful, awful takes from the poster.

To my knowledge, Smith wasn’t a  protester. He has, however, been outspoken of the embarrassing behavior and unethical leadership we currently have in office, so that alone is more than enough to make some folks micro-analyze his Football abilities an excuse to cry about cutting him. If he were cut, he would be picked up by a team within 24 hours.

teams need strong, veteran leadership in the locker room. Smith has two super bowl rings, won one last year for a team that had possibly the worst thing happen to them right before the playoffs,  and has proven he can contribute. Realistically, Smith will be what...the fourth or fifth option on offense? And that may be generous considering we have unknowns in Moore and Samuel. Having Torrey as the fifth option and as valuable depth is incredible for any team.

Dude do you read comments? I've never said anything about protesting. He SUCKS AT CATCHING THE BALL, can u read that?

It may have been said, but I did not have time to read the entire thread--I work for a living, dammit.  Those fries do not salt themselves!

Byrd may not be the type of WR they need.  Samuel, Moore, Wright,  Smith---where does Byrd find the field?  Special teams?   Do not be surprised if we go with five WRs or look for a bigger WR to be cut.  If not, we could put Bug or Ross on the PS...

I think a new gig might benefit Byrd.  Don't forget, we now have a FB, RB, and backup TE who can catch the ball.

He is a lock IF we keep 6 and/or he pllays special teams.  How does Byrd find the field, with Smith, Samuel, Wright, and Moore healthy?

We have Armah, CMC, and Thomas now giving Cam other options...may not need 6.  On  the PS, we could put a Ross or Bug and have a big WR...I dunno-just spitballing here.

I think it's up to Norv. If he likes Byrd, we keep 6.

Also note, Moore is a rookie and Samuel may as well be. If it were up to me, I'd keep a 6th receiver, and who that is would depend on my film analysis and the WRs coach's input. As others have said, Byrd's role is essentially the same as Samuel or Wright. Another big target may be preferred. I'm not sure we keep Bug Howard, but it wouldn't surprise me to see us sign a big receiver after cuts.

so did Ted Ginn but goddamn if we didn't miss him last year

Smith is also way more proven than Byrd's 10 catches but BYRD GOES FAST NYOOM

Byrd has a history of injury. He is small. When you're playing with twos and threes, if you are anywhere near starting material, you should stand out (and even Mose Frazier has arguably been making more of a statement lately). Byrd hasn't really done that with any consistency, and when it came time to quell fears about his durability when our receivers were hurt last year, he too was on the sidelines. He's not needed for ST because we have so many, bigger, stronger returners who are probably more athletic. And, the rules have made playing ST even safer. Moreover, all the same type of crap was said on the Huddle about Philly Brown. Byrd may get taken if someone gets desperate, but it's not like he's some hot commodity.

Byrd over Torrey Smith is simply ludicrous. Smith is a proven vet whom I believe that I read somewhere has been extremely durable. He's still in his prime and has leaps and bounds of experience compared to Byrd. And he's still a viable deep threat who was instrumental in  the Eagles' postseason finish.

I mean, I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to keep Byrd as depth, but I can easily see keeping some other player at another position where we need depth than a sixth receiver.

Why is Torrey Smith considered such a lock? He is not fast anymore. He was well below the league average last year for average max speed for wide receivers. One could argue not only is he not fast, he is now slow. Was Torrey ever really known for his hands?

If Smith gets cut, it'll be due to his high salary and the fact that we suddenly have depth at WR. And, #22 is more WR than RB.

Clay wasnt hot commodity but was taken, and frazier only got the targets he did because everyone else was doubled and he might have been the hot route for that play. BYRD only got one target the hole game but was still getting separation. Cant judge a player thats not getting opportunities in game. And Byrd is the BEST choice for returner. But like I said, he will have more opportunities with another team.

But what yall not thinking about is contracts. Smith is just insurance for the year, a rental. U really think they want to resign him for 5 million more next year or he take a paycut. What about Funchess upcoming contract. Do u really think they have enough money for everyone.

The only shot Byrd has of making this team is if the Panthers keep 6 which is far from guaranteed considering CMC lines up in the slot and even on the outside quite a bit.

Funchess

Smith

Wright

Samuel

Moore

Those are the locks.

That's a really good looking group.

There is really no reason to keep bird as a sixth receiver, because we will not have 6 active receivers on game day. Let him go play somewhere else.

We will keep 6 because of the injuries and issues last year. Coache's and GM's memory are short. They will remember the injuries and trouble fielding decent receivers at the end of last year and will keep 6 this year.

Okay, I'll play along for a minute.

Who won't get their Jerseys on game day?
