Panthers already have 5 locks at wide receiver, and Byrd ain't one of them.

Luxury for depth that we routinely don't have depth at. I get what you're saying but Torrey was the ultimate insurance policy:

-we secured him if the free agent wr market got crazy which it did (then people mention getting Mike Wallace for cheaper but his track record isn't as good as Torrey's for being a good teammate)

-as mentioned above the team had unknowns but what wasn't an unknown is the fact that Samuel and Bryd both got injured twice and both guys broke something during the season. So Torrey was a guy who's typically healthy

-and last Torrey was insurance if the board fell wrong and wr's were drafted before are pick or teams wanted too much to trade up to snag a guy we liked.

I always looked at Torrey as a season plus one type of guy. If Samuel takes the next step and doesn't get hurt, Torrey won't be here for the following season. But if not then he'll be here for the long haul

Very true. We didn't know we'd have Moore at the time. I guess you could justify the 5 mil for a decent backup for Funch this season.

Man,... the Torrey hate is unreal. I just looked it up, From Baltimore until his first season with the 49ers, he averaged up to 20 yards per reception, all deep throwers as Kap still played.

Once Kap was gone and it was Blaine Gabbert the checkdown extraordinaire, his stats crumbled.

With Phily his stats early on with Wentz were tough but got better,.. then deep thrower Foles comes in, Peterson took a couple of games to adjust his play calls to match Foles(said that before and after the Superbowl), then Torrey shined.

Torrey was also clutch when it mattered, the playoffs and Superbowl,.. so hes big time in big time games.

Next hes always been healthy--

The Eagles website has him still for 4.36 40 speed as of 2017,. so I dont know what kind of crack people use when they say hes slow,...

Panthers will keep 6 WRs, especially given the injury bug they had last year.  They'd be crazy to let Byrd get to PS and risk another team grabbing him.

There is zero chance Smith gets cut because if nothing else, Smith is a veteran presence that our young receivers need.

The reason why some folks want Smith gone has nothing to do with his abilities in pads. Check Smith’s twitter feed and activism off the field. That is too much for some people to comprehend or deal with.

Injury bug has already started, so you make some good points. Must be something in the water down here, UNC got bit big time last year and unfortunately it looks like it may have carried over again this season.

The only shot Byrd has of making this team is if the Panthers keep 6 which is far from guaranteed considering CMC lines up in the slot and even on the outside quite a bit.

Funchess

Smith

Wright

Samuel

Moore

Those are the locks.

This should be a given. Not sure why there's so much love for Byrd and the few flashes he's shown in his career. He's never been good - college or pro.

I think we'll carry six receivers going into the season. Will Byrd be one of them? No. I think Byrd is getting a chance to show out and get some interest from other teams. We may even see him end up in Buffalo. He's a good guy, but I think his skillset here is duplicated a couple of times already in the top 5.

In my opinion, Byrd will shuffle off to another team and start the second phase of his career and perform really well, rather than be stuck way down on the depth chart.

In his place, the sixth receiver slot will go to either Mose Frazier or Bug Howard.

He will end up in Buffalo, if Clay is there, its no doubt in my mind Byrd could make the team. Byrd was the only one Benjamin would talk to the other week. Strange

Wright, CMC, and Samuel all seem like guys that could get reps in the slot which is where I see Byrd mostly getting snaps.  I would almost think the chance of us keeping 6 receivers would be higher if we had an extra bigger receiver which we don't.

With that being said though last year got pretty rough with all of the injuries to our receivers so maybe the coaches decide to keep 6.  Especially with carrying one less QB I could see the numbers being easier to work out.

Even if we do carry 6 receivers the 6th one will most likely not be active on games days.

Sometimes the easiest way to determine the roster is to look at the game day 46 first.  Everyone likes to say that the last few spots are often made by special team guys but that really isn't true.

Your special team players have to be active on game day.  The last 7 guys are either backups that you can survive without for one game (like a 9th or 10th lineman) or players with potential that you don't want other teams to get.

Byrd doesn't play the slot that much, watch where he lines up most of the Buffalo game.
