Panthers already have 5 locks at wide receiver, and Byrd ain't one of them.

I don’t think you have your finger on the pulse of this team as much as you’d like everyone to believe. You didn’t have Jermaine Carter Jr. making the team in your latest mock draft while he’s out making plays in camp, making plays in preseason, and getting singled out by Luke as one of the off-season standouts. You also posted shortly before the C.J. Anderson signing that we will all be disappointed if we’re hoping for him.

Bottom line is you’re a photographer. You practically have the same level of access to the team as the rest of us do. You can argue you have friends on the inside with higher access, but your sentiments about the team and who is on the roster bubble do not appear to be shared by the other reporters...so evidently that’s your own take from your own observations. Speaking of which...it’s hard to get a clear and accurate perspective on the team when you’re watching training camp through a camera lens.

If for no other reasons than they traded for him and he's obviously a better receiver than Bryd.

I want to be in the fantasy league of anyone wanting Damiere Byrd over Smith.

I want to be in the fantasy league that would even pick up Smith. Bryd had 2 tds at the end of the year before he got hurt and Smith had 2 all of last year. Ok I'm glad ur not running the team.

Why is Torrey Smith considered such a lock? He is not fast anymore. He was well below the league average last year for average max speed for wide receivers. One could argue not only is he not fast, he is now slow. Was Torrey ever really known for his hands?

Yeah, Torrey is probably a lock, but I'm not so sure he should.

Torrey is as big of a lock as funchess and Moore for this season. He's a vet that might not be as fast anymore but still can get off press and beat people deep. And more importantly he knows how to stay healthy. Until Samuel or Bryd show that they can get deep routinely AND stay healthy Smith will be on this roster.

The injury history is a fair point and having guys who can stay healthy is a big deal, I agree. But let's say everyone is healthy though... When we're in a 2WR set it should be Funch and Moore out there or maybe Moore and Samuels on occasion. 3WR set I wouldn't want it to be anyone other than Funch and Moore outside with either Samuel or Wright or CMC in the slot. So I guess IMO Torrey shouldn't be seeing the field much and is nothing more than a luxury for depth. Kind of unsettling paying a guy 5 mil to be that.

Why am I surprised this analogy went over your head?

Gamecock fan, correct?

I would keep Byrd because I don't want CMC, DJ Moore, Samuel, and Donte returning kicks/punts on a regular basis because it increases their chances of injury. These 4 are essential to the team's future. Finally , in his limtied time on the field Damiere has shown he is able to make plays.

We kept 6 receivers last year, why are some of you acting like it's some difficult thing to do.

KB / Funch / Shepard / Samuel / Byrd / Clay

If memory serves were the six that we ended up with to close out the final 53, and eventually Bersin returned due to injury.

We kept 4 HB's last year, and CAP barely played, Whit got a couple touches, I could see us dropping CAP, and keeping Hood on the PS with Barner as the 3rd back on the depth chart. But again we kept four HB's and six receivers out of camp last year.

Stew / CMC / CAP / Whit

I could also see an immediate free space due to the fact WE CLOSED CAMP WITH TWO KICKERS!

The numbers game to keep Byrd's ability around isn't a hard one to sort is all I'm saying, I think he's a lock, no one behind him is dynamic in any way we've seen .

Clay was traded to Buffalo before the season started and brought back after  KB was traded and he was waived by the Bills

Luxury for depth that we routinely don't have depth at. I get what you're saying but Torrey was the ultimate insurance policy:

-we secured him if the free agent wr market got crazy which it did (then people mention getting Mike Wallace for cheaper but his track record isn't as good as Torrey's for being a good teammate)

-as mentioned above the team had unknowns but what wasn't an unknown is the fact that Samuel and Bryd both got injured twice and both guys broke something during the season. So Torrey was a guy who's typically healthy

-and last Torrey was insurance if the board fell wrong and wr's were drafted before are pick or teams wanted too much to trade up to snag a guy we liked.

I always looked at Torrey as a season plus one type of guy. If Samuel takes the next step and doesn't get hurt, Torrey won't be here for the following season. But if not then he'll be here for the long haul

I second this. I think Byrd could be a very dangerous kick and punt return specialist for us. Not to mention I cringe to think of the possible injury that CMC, Moore, or Samuel could receive fielding those returns.

Also you save another 5 mil to spend elsewhere. There is no reason for him to make this team and not Bryd. His hands are so trash. People say oh he has won two super bowls. Guess what not because of his ass.

Code for “I don’t like him because he is anthem protest supporter and he doesn’t stick to sports”
