Panthers already have 5 locks at wide receiver, and Byrd ain't one of them.

That trade was hogwash. The Eagles would've gave him away for nothing. Pretty much both teams saying, "here, we don't want this guy anymore." Fantasy!?!? News flash - no one in any fantasy league SHOULD want either one of these guys! Both are irrelevant in that world.

It bothers me that we'd rather try and squeeze the last ounce of talent out of Torrey Smith instead of making an investment in Byrd who IMO has proven to be a play maker with game changing speed who could be a piece of our roster for the next 3-4 seasons and not just 1.

This would be the “surprise” vet cut that may happen.   The big win is you get 5 million to potentially sign OL and DB depth.  Not sure it will happen but the scenario is not far fetched.

I think we'll carry six receivers going into the season. Will Byrd be one of them? No. I think Byrd is getting a chance to show out and get some interest from other teams. We may even see him end up in Buffalo. He's a good guy, but I think his skillset here is duplicated a couple of times already in the top 5.

In my opinion, Byrd will shuffle off to another team and start the second phase of his career and perform really well, rather than be stuck way down on the depth chart.

In his place, the sixth receiver slot will go to either Mose Frazier or Bug Howard.

frankly I don't think there's any real shot Byrd goes anywhere, after all, every credible reporter from camp has made mention of the strong preseason he's had

This and "he's the fastest guy on the team" every year. I'm convinced they only keep him because he's good practice for the defense to chase around.

If he was cut he wouldn't have been available for his current salary.  He would have hit the market that was paying outrageous salaries to any decent receiver. He certainly wouldn't be signed for a single affordable year.

Smith isn't getting cut, he's the only deep threat that has shown an ability to stay healthy in this league. If Samuel and Byrd show the team they can remain healthy THEN next season could be a possibility but if they get banged up all year then Smith will be here for 2 seasons.

Why is Torrey Smith considered such a lock? He is not fast anymore. He was well below the league average last year for average max speed for wide receivers. One could argue not only is he not fast, he is now slow. Was Torrey ever really known for his hands?

Also you save another 5 mil to spend elsewhere. There is no reason for him to make this team and not Bryd. His hands are so trash. People say oh he has won two super bowls. Guess what not because of his ass.

Torrey is as big of a lock as funchess and Moore for this season. He's a vet that might not be as fast anymore but still can get off press and beat people deep. And more importantly he knows how to stay healthy. Until Samuel or Bryd show that they can get deep routinely AND stay healthy Smith will be on this roster.
