Thoughts on Trading Funchess?

If you are willing to trade Funchess you could always just trade a draft pick.

If Funchess has any kind of decent year this year I would expect him to get a decent contract from someone as a free agent based on what #2 type of receivers received this last offseason.  Very good chance you could get a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick.  Trading a 4th now and receiving a 3rd later would be a net gain and you would keep him for one more year on a very good contract.

Speaking of trading WRs, what about Bryd?  If the staff decides to go with just 5 receivers I could see him left out. You could even try to showcase him some in the preseason games.  I'm not delusional in thinking you are going get a proven vet for him but maybe some other team has a CB or lineman buried on the depth chart that has some potential.

I mean, would we even get back our investment in him? I kind of doubt it.

Talent wise, I think we could get a late 2nd or early third.  But he's in the final year of his contract, so nobody's going to give up a good draft pick for a player that they will have to give a big contract to after the season.  If he was a star, maybe, but not for a solid #2 receiver.

I saw the idea of trading Funchess for immediate secondary or o-line help being floated around and was curious to see if others felt the same. I can't envision our organization pulling the rug out from under Funchess considering our history and his reputation as an excellent teammate. He also has yet to reach his potential as a WR, in my opinion.

However, if we continue to see promise/production out of the other WRs (Moore, Wright, Smith, Samuel, & Byrd) plus Olsen/Thomas, is this a tough business move that would raise our playoff potential? Another factor is Funchess' upcoming contract that will eat away at the salary cap for the near future.

D-Line, O-Line, Secondary... take your pick. Anything of value would have been better for this team than Funchess.

This would have been the correct move.

The people on page one who thought this thought of trading funchess was "retarded."

Yeah I was called retarded and now look where we are. It's Why NE is GOAT with players like Funchess. They use them and then trade them for picks so they can keep OL and DL playing well.
