Thoughts on Trading Funchess?

Because in a salary cap league, it is “idiotic” to have an embarrassment of riches at one position, while entire units (secondary & o-line) are wholly underwhelming.

You first have to have an embarrassment of riches. That's debatable.  But I really don't think that outside of the Huddle (perhaps Carolina), people are thinking that we are rich at receiver.

I certainly am not thinking of trading our young, talented, established X receiver after one preseason game. That's crazy talk.

People can go all goo goo gaga over the likes of smallish journeyman and UDFA receivers with limited talent all they like, but our receiving corps looks supremely better with Funchess, who is the only proven starter-level WR that we have on the roster other than maybe a past-prime Smith who has arguably been more of the one-trick pony variety throughout his career.

We need a complete WR corps, if you're going to trade someone, let it be Smith. No one is trying to give us a CB worth a damn---certainly not worth Funchess. And, honestly, I'd rather have Kayvon Webster or Pacman Jones with Funchess than let's say a Pierre Desir or Nate Hairston without him.

We need to bide our time, maybe even until after cuts, and after more evaluation of our CB group, before we go bat crazy. The O-line may be better and more deep than we thought.

Yep, but that reason is because Dez's diva bullshit is no longer worth what he brings to the table as a player. I wouldn't want him.

I like Funchess. He showed that he's a legit starting NFL WR last season. BUT, I'd trade him for a legit starting caliber CB. Right now. Without hesitation. Someone is going to give him $10-12M per year in free agency next year, if not more. I hope that isn't us.

I totally agree. Funch is probably gone after this season so flipping him isn't Necessarily a bad idea.  The problem is that nobody is gonna trade a legit CB for an unproven WR who is gonna want to get overpaid after the season.

What do we really need a "big WR" for? We have two talented TEs and 4 really good WRs.

Versatility my guy.

It would be nice to have a jump ball WR for Cam on the roster. Not only that Funchess is still our best WR until proven otherwise.

Why should we trade him?

I’d rather Cam throw a jump ball up for Moore over Funchess if given the option

I questioned a trade in another post, and I’ve always had my reservations about Funchess,..

but I don’t hate him, don’t understand the hate of him, and he’s come a long way with plenty of upside still in him, at 24 as it’s been pointed out.

He’s versatile, runs clean routes. My beef is that when it’s on the line he seems to choke, botched a couple of end zone touchdowns and a sideline 4th down that all would have changed our season and pulled those games out.

Hes got time to redeem himself.

Some of y’all are acting like this is an insane question...what’s more important to this team? WR, Oline or secondary help?

If you don’t rank WR last out of those options, then I don’t know what to tell ya. I don’t think the OP is proposing to trade Funchess just cuz he doesn’t like him...I think it’s bc he knows the only way to get something good in return is to trade a good player. There’s been multiple mentions of Funchess still being good while not having hit his potential yet...well guess what? That’s a good bargaining chip.

So if our oline and secondary still looks like it does at the end of the preseason, like it does now, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if somebody like Funchess was offered for an upgrade. Id be fine rolling with Moore, Torrey, Wright, Samuel, Byrd, Olsen and Thomas as our receivers than have to watch our oline and secondary suck.

With all this said, I’m not trading Funchess for some mediocre player...he’s gotta be on the same level of Funchess aka a solid player we know would be an upgrade.

I will be Mr. Obvious. It is impossible to analyze without knowing who he is traded for. Few, if any, players are so sacrosanct that a trade for the right price is impossible. If I had to guess, I think most of the rest of the league would view Funchess as a #2 receiver at best with many viewing him as a #3 receiver.

Most teams covet YAC and Funchess averaged about 4.4 yards after the catch last season, which was his best season. He had a total of 284 yards after the catch in 2017 and 63 catches of 113 targets. This total YAC would rank him 49th in the league (all players). By way of comparison, Ted Ginn had 288 YAC in New Orleans and 53 catches and 70 targets.
