Thoughts on Trading Funchess?

I would love to hear your “retarded” thoughts.

It's funny how he's on the board all the time, but hasn't come back to this thread once.

I understand people being on either side of the fence at the beginning of the season. The problem I have is those like @t96 who dismissed the idea outright. Especially labeling the idea as "retarded."

I’m sure he is too busy coming up with his next thread topic.

Why would I remember this thread and come back to it...?

I stand by what I said knowing what we knew before the season — that Funch had a very solid season last year and DJ and Samuel were young and very raw and we had SB aspirations. With all the facts available in August it would’ve been dumb to trade him or even consider it.

Obviously circumstances have changed drastically. Funch has proven to be completely useless, our season went down the drain and DJ and Samuel have proved themselves capable of starting. That all creates the perfect case of hindsight being 20/20. Nobody knew any of this in August.

Maybe I'm confused but what exactly are you going to trade?  Isn't he a free agent next year?

You don't trade players, you trade their contracts.

At this point you are hoping to get a comp pick out of him.  Even if he would have traded at the beginning it wouldn't have been for much more, if any, than what the comp pick will potentially be.  That is if we decide to play the comp pick game.

Look at the date of original post.

I did. You didn’t.

That’s the only kind of deal we should offer him and I hope he takes it

No, we shouldn't offer him anything. I wouldn't want him back as a Panthers at veteran minimum. We've moved on amd maybe a change of scenery would help him. I doubt it, but maybe. I think he may be on that KB path of being out of the league soon.

I agree.  Samuel, Wright, and Moore look like a better combo at WR than we have had in a long time.  If we can find a good big body who is relatively cheap, go for it, but otherwise roll with what we have, sans Funchess.

Although I don't think he will follow the KB path.  More likely, he will follow the Lafell path.

I wouldn't be surprised if we draft another bigger WR.aybe not another jumbo receiver but a classic "big" WR. A 6'2"ish or so guy. Riley Ridley would fit nicely.

I might would consider putting a 2nd round tender on him just to see if someone bites and let the market decide his fate.  He's still worth a roster spot despite his recent shortcomings, if the price is right that is.  You need good depth and he certainly is that.

I’m not as down on Funch as most...he is tough, plays hard, good character from when we have seen

kb was fat and lazy and had a crap attitude

Funch does screw up a lot though...he’s not done in the nfl

His "performance" of late has been lazier than anything KB ever did as a Panther. He's running routes like he doesn't give a single fug and he's not even looking for the ball with numerous miscommunications on routes. No, not even at veteran minimum. He's addition by subtraction at this point.

I have mixed feelings about this.  I don't want to waste another draft pick on another WR.  Without Funchess and Olsen, we are losing to key big guys downfield.  Thomas and Manhertz have both shown their weaknesses and the rest of our receivers are not towers.    The reality is, Funfun will want his relatively undeserved payday...and we aren't about to give it to him.  Funchess, thanks for the first downs and TDs especially the catch against GB in '15 in the endzone.
