Dickson was definitely an above average #2 TE for us the entire time he was here. There's a reason the guy got interest from several teams as a starter this year and the Hawks signed him to be their guy after letting Willson and Graham walk...

Dickson was adequate for what we asked of him, which overall wasn't terriblly much outside of last year. We signed him relatively cheap from the Ravens initially because outside of one season he was young and unproven and we were cap strapped. He played the game of his life against the Lions in a contract year in 2017, hats off to him for stepping up and earning another contract.

There's also the looming issue of Olsen getting older, and other than 2017 he was incredibly and frankly almost unrealistically durable for us. Some fans complained when he got his new contract, but Greg can almost demand whatever he wants at this point. We've been needing a young up and coming TE to learn and eventually take the reigns from Greg. That guy was never supposed to be Ed Dickson. That isn't a shot at Dickson, that's just the reality.

We dont use a #2 TE much so i fully expect the huddle to call him a bust when he cant crack much action because Greg is still here and producing.

Because the huddle thinks every position needs to be a above average starter

people, the cap makes ot difficult to retain good starters at each position. You have to decide where your strengths are and where you deficiencies will be when you put together a roster. #2 TE simply isnt that important of a position to spent limited assets on.

no one has a complete team. If they do its very short lived cause good players get paid a lot of money and you cant keep them all.

People acting like we have been so foolish to not have a stud #2 TE. Yo dupe, we have more important things to make sure we are sufficient at due to what we want to do and how much cap room we have to do it!!

Don't forget word was there were multiple teams trying to trade up for him and we had the full night and morning to scout for that pick.

He's going to be an effective TE in the league.  He has a very high floor which I like along with being super athletic.  Excellent combo for that position.  Per the drunk Bob Dylan dude above, he may not get splashy stats this year, but he's going to be an asset.

I won’t pop you, but I really like Thomas. I thought it was our second best pick (behind Moore). Both to give us a #2 TE who can be a valuable receiver and replace Greg. Dickson averaged about 50% of snaps in 2014-2016 (can’t count 81% in 2017 since Olsen only had 33%), so even though he didn’t catch a lot of balls, he played. I blame it a bit on Shula who I thought was awful.

I think Thomas will be valuable and maybe get 25-30 receptions. Not a lot, but more than Dickson and the big key is that like our other guys I think he’ll have a chance to break some tackles and make plays.

You are also right on the glamorization of TE2. Ooh, Shockey this and that. No one ever seems to look at the stats where Olsen and Dickson in 2014-2016 outgained 2011 Olsen and Shockey by 200-300 yards. I personally saw Thomas as a solid player with a ton of upside. He should be TE2, give us more receiving upside than Dickson and then hopefully can be a stud to take over when Greg retires.

The other 1/2 is called pass protection & run blocking something Dickson lacked. When you have 2 TEs that can do both, you limit opposing defenses pass rushers & LBs blitz something this offfense struggled against.

Thomas will probably be on the field much as Olsen and those receiving #s gonna be much higher. Fans forget that Turner loves to run the ball and then hit them w/ PA something Shula forget about totally.

The fact that Ian Thomas is making such an immediate impact as a rookie speaks volumes about just how mediocre our competition at TE2 has been since Shockey left. It doesn't paint a pretty picture when you realize how long it's been since Shockey last suited up here.

Well Marty brought in Olsen and had a few decent tightends in years past— gettlemen  only really brought Dickson who was serviceable at best,..Drafted poorly,..

Marty is back and does well with the tightends
