Patriots work out Brenton Bersin...

Now that Jerry Richardson no longer owns the Panthers, it appears Brenton Bersin’s scholarship there has expired.

But he has continued to look for work, away from his patron. According to Doug Kyed of NESN, Bersin worked out for the Patriots last week.

The wide receiver who grew up in Richardson’s neighborhood in Charlotte, and who perhaps coincidentally has spent parts of each of the last six seasons with the Panthers, no longer works there. (It had to be particularly sad for him not going to training camp at Wofford College this year, since he and Richardson shared an alma mater as well.)

I have a difficult time with the Richardson angle given the number of times (5) he was released and resigned.

Looks like Hurney maybe finally brought in some real receiver competition such that he isn't actually one of better options we have at that part of the depth chart

I wish him the best of luck to be honest. While many here didn't like him and always wanted to bash him for his mistakes as a returner he really wasn't that bad of a receiver. He was pretty reliable whenever we absolutely had to have a catch for a  key 1st down to extend a drive on 3rd or 4th down. He obviously isn't a top receiver but he was always solid depth when we needed him.

I was guilty early on (pre-him cutting his hair) of ragging on him.

Truth is, he was a hard worker and caught almost everything we needed him to catch. I was bummed not to see him in Wofford this year, but I understand why.

If he doesn’t make a team this year he has a pretty nice back up plan!

    • Team is dangerous right now, all four lines are contributing and the speed at which the guys play at is tremendous.
    • And every nfl player wannabe tries to up their draft position through things like the combine and theyre all basically lying though those drills theyve practiced hundreds of times that have little bearing on if theyre a good football player. The pro days are even worse. All you have to do is dupe 1 team. Is it right? No. But until teams put more emphasis on college tape vs. What they did in shorts with no defense it'll happen every year. I doubt there is a single player that wouldn't try anything to up their draft prospects.  Young had years of tape and that shouldve been what the decision was based on. Not a scale and throwing in shorts.  ( btw I think the combine and pro days are 90% a waste of time) Young has it financially made already. It's up to him if he wants to be a good football player too. I think the benching was the best thing that could've happened to him. It remains to be seen if it was enough
    • This.  Honest introspection on his behalf would have seen that size and strength were his biggest weaknesses. He looks no different. With the programs in the NFL, he could have come back to camp 10 lbs of muscle heavier. Easily. If had done so, it would have been reported on. It would have been the hottest story…. But we never saw anything of the sort, so it probably never happened.  He showed improvement this last game, likely from Andy’s tutelage. He has to show something VERY special to close the season out to change my thinking on him… like 4 game winning streak with a clutch 4th quarter comeback. Then maybe.
