Trigger for Hiring Norv

Just the heat in general.

The fan base generated enough $$$ to fly a banner on gameday.

The local news carried the story of it

The media pointing out on practically every network how bad he was.

Just a tipping point of a bunch of things

Gotta believe the pending change of ownership factored into Rivera's thinking.

It's well established that Rivera had been nudged in the direction of firing Shula before but had pushed back. Of course, knowing that you're getting a new boss can lead a lot of people to do things they might not have done otherwise.

That said, I question whether Tepper would have pushed for Shula to be let go. He's not really pushing for any major changes this season, so maybe he wound up firing Shula for no reason.

Granted, there was reason, but Rivera certainly hadn't seen it

I can’t stand that weasel Sean Peyton but he’s a offensive genius

I believe he looked at Shulas offense the last few years and it took one film session to know our whole offensive  playbook from front cover to the back.   He didn’t need ginn or Klein’s help

I don't think anybody doubts that Payton was playing chess while Shula was playing checkers.

That said, our problems with the Saints over the last few years haven't been due to an inability to score on them so much as an inability to prevent them from scoring on us.

We've put up points. They just put up more points.

It wasn't just Norv it was Scott as well. This was a package deal for the Turner's to come in and fix the offense. Cam has regressed as has the whole offense since 2015. We went from number 1 in points to middle of the road in 2 years.  A change was needed. What we got in Norv was not just an offensive coordinator but hopefully an offensive head coach who manages the offensive side of the ball and the 4 and 2 situations.

I don't think they needed Klein or Ginn to figure us out. They are a division rival who has scouted and seen us twice a year forever.

They were significantly better against us, on either side of the ball, last season than they had been. It wasn't because of talent and it wasn't like they just stumbled onto something that other teams didn't.

So my next question:

What is the impact of having players, who have been with an organization for a significant amount of time, go to division rivals. What information is shared between the players and new coaches, if any? I can't imagine that Brees and Payton didn't at least speak with Klein or Ginn during film study about specifics of the Panthers.

The first game last season was the worst the Panther's have played against the Saints in quite some time.

That's a long running debate.

Some people say it's a huge deal. Others think it's inconsequential. There's no real definitive answer, so it's largely a matter of opinion.

Me? Yeah, I think it has an effect, though not necessarily a big one.

I think A.J. Klein spending 4 years in a role of support, and occassional starts, could provide enough inside information on our fairly static defense to make a difference. As you may have noticed, our 3rd game, with Klein out, was our best match-up against the Saints; if that game is played in Charlotte I would argue that it would've been a Panthers win. I can't say that about the first two games.

Outside the conference...yea I can see it helping.  Outside the division, and inside the conference....maybe a sliver of help.  Inside the division...nah.

The really smart coaches are just that, really smart...and I think that Payton is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL.  He doesn't need Teddy to tell him Trai is playing poorly, that Williams probably can't handle Cam 1 on 1, that Funchess was hurt.  He can see that one the tape.

Now a backup QB going over?  That might mean something different entirely.  If Shula had stayed, and the Bucs picked up Anderson this offseason...yea I can see that helping.

I'm not sure that you are grasping the amount of knowledge a player would have on a coaching staff and players after 4 years.

Middle Linebacker is the quarterback of the defense, particularly the Panthers defense. Agree or disagree?
