Observations from camp today.....

No doubt Davis doesn't have elite speed. 3 ACL surgeries took care of that. But the reason Davis has been the starter is that he has been a beast since 2015. He was elected to the probowl in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Sure the pro bowl can be popularity but it isn't like he ever went to the probowl before 2015. No he is still playing at a high level when he isn't involved in a foot race with a fast receiver. That really hasn't been his game since he was chasing Vick around the field. But if Shaq wants to be the man then he needs to take these 4 games and run with them. Davis will be right there rooting for him. He has talked about a reduced role for some time but keeps playing  because he is the best option not named Luke. I doubt he would be upset if Shaq grabs the position and allows him to get more rest and possibly extend his career.

Perhaps TD's play is slipping this camp, or maybe not, but to say his level of play on the field slipped the past couple of years doesn't jibe with what I saw.

Yahoo Sports:

Davis has played in 164 games in his career, starting 146. He has 28 sacks, 13 interceptions and 18 forced fumbles. His play certainly hasn't slipped with age -- his three Pro Bowl selections have come in each of the last three seasons.

In 2015, he was a first-team All-Pro.

This season may be the end, but I snicker at those who say that there was something last season or before that belied a fall from excellence.

- I am growing pretty optimistic about this draft class after having watched them the past two weeks. I can't recall a draft class in recent memory where so many of them are legitimately competing to contribute right away.

I think this is very key for us.  Moore, Jackson, Gaulden and Thomas all are making this one of our strongest draft classes in many years if not the best.  Granted it is only training camp but it's a start.

Each of these players fill a position of great need for us and makes each group from weak to at least workable going forward.

I have already prepared myself for the first time Gaulden or Jackson get burned and the Huddle blows up with the worst picks ever threads.   It's gonna happen.   Every rookie that has played the game hasn't made a miscue here and there.  If they can keep them to a minimum we are going to be good.

Moore IMO is expected to make an impact.  He's a first rounder and someone we desperately needed.   I believe he will have a solid camp and season.

Thomas is probably going to be on the list of Steals of the Draft.  Someone saw something special in him and we are very lucky to have him.  Losing Manhertz for the duration of training camp could not have been a better gift for Thomas.  He has been able to play with the #1s and making it known he can contribute.   His better known attribute was blocking and if he can block effectively as well as his good hands.   We'll have probably the best TE duo we have had since Olsen and Shockey.   Just another weapon for Cam.

I am excited.  I don't know anyone could be pessimistic about our 1st four picks.  They seem to be nailed picks.
