Observations from camp today.....

Here are a few observations from Carolina Panthers training camp today.

- Atrocious day for backup quarterbacks. There were 4 picks thrown by them in a single team drill period.

- Overall, the secondary kicked the tails of the receivers all day long.

- Damiere Byrd had another lackluster day. He remains hot and cold this year when he really needs to stand out. At this point Curtis Samuel looks like he should get the reps in games.

- Cam Newton looked pretty darn good. Crisp pass to Olsen over the middle was on the money hitting him in stride. Good to see.

- I am growing pretty optimistic about this draft class after having watched them the past two weeks. I can't recall a draft class in recent memory where so many of them are legitimately competing to contribute right away.

- Norv Turner isn't shy about getting on the case of players or correcting them. Something Shula was never too big on during practice.

- You all may not like Matt Kalil, but you better pray he stays healthy. Anyone behind him is much, much worse.

- Funchess has had an OK camp. Not great. Not bad. Just ok. Was hoping for him to dominate out there but he just isn't. He should be standing out heads and shoulders above the other larger receivers.

- Shaq Thompson got the play of the day today when he tipped a Gilbert thrown ball at the line, contorted his body to make the interception and run with it.

- I am worried TD's play may have fallen off a bit. He just doesn't look to have the wheels he used to. Had a hard time keeping up with receivers. Hope it is just my eyes.

I love TD but he has been falling for two years now and it is a concern

we are getting old on defense in key areas.

OL, my god,  just pray

TD and RKalil should have been done. This was a good year to do it...if we kept Norwell. Would have been nice to keep Norman too.

Tis’ not the Panther/Hurney way though. We’ll drag this out and cling on, reward then for being fan favorites. God forbid our team look to the future or hurt casual fans’ feelings.

But maybe Tepper is just letting this year play out and the Panthers shift their main goal to winning.

im not understanding how this scenario works in your head.....

If we would have moved on from davis and kalil via cutting them we'd still be paying them.... making it impossible to afford norwell...

Now imagine our cap if we kept Norman...this would have been a disaster season for us....

    • This.  Honest introspection on his behalf would have seen that size and strength were his biggest weaknesses. He looks no different. With the programs in the NFL, he could have come back to camp 10 lbs of muscle heavier. Easily. If had done so, it would have been reported on. It would have been the hottest story…. But we never saw anything of the sort, so it probably never happened.  He showed improvement this last game, likely from Andy’s tutelage. He has to show something VERY special to close the season out to change my thinking on him… like 4 game winning streak with a clutch 4th quarter comeback. Then maybe.
    • It absolutely is on him for doing it and I'd wager he used a good bit of that psychology major to help him through interviews because he could read people better than most. The Panthers should have recognized it for what it was, hell, we all did, but you can't absolve him just because everyone else does it.    38 Million guaranteed.
    • No Ikem vs the best pass rushing team in the NFL?  With no pocket for Bryce to step in to because of arguably the best interior DL in the NFL, Dexter Lawrence? Giants win comfortably IMO.  Look at how hype the Panthers were to win last week.  That was enough for them. The Panthers have struggled against mobile QBs this year too.  Guys who can extend the play.  Bo Nix, Marcus Mariota, Caleb Williams.  Panthers have struggled against all QBs this year to be honest, but those guys in particular did the best statistically.  Expect a big game from Danny Dimes, Nabers, and Tyrone.
