It’s all hypothetical and if we didn’t take Donte then I could easily see him lasting or bumping Oliver down.

Also, how is mortgaging your future equivalent to trading a 2019 3rd when we have two? There are only so many spots on the roster and trading a future 3rd is not even close to trading away future 1sts and 2nds like the Brown 1st that should have been Demaryius Thomas or Dez Bryant. I didn’t like Marty trading down so much because we know 8 picks in 2018 and 8 picks in 2019 aren’t making the team.

I’ve been very consistent in the pre-draft discussions that I loved the top of the C/G class and that I would happily use our 4 3rds the next two years to make some moves. I hope Gaulden is awesome, but we needed a G in 2018 (I was hoping Moton, but that was a naive hope assuming 100% health) and C in 2019 and there was so much cheap depth at S sitting in FAs.

While Oliver is a guy I like,  having  another big, long CB  the reason we didn't draft Oliver is because we already have 3 long armed CBs, though one is down now, and we still didn't have anyone that can man up and shut down the faster WRs that griefed us last year. That's still a problem if we draft Oliver. There's a reason he fell like he did. It's not because of his lack of talent, moreso because there's plenty of guys who can do what he does.

To trade back in the second, you'd have to more than likely use both thirds, plus more picks THEN you want to trade back into the 4th and draft Thomas, and that alone took a future third rounder. Unless you're giving up next years second as well, you're not gonna get 2 2nds and a 4th this draft with 4 3rd round picks between two years.

And that's great that you liked them, a lot of people liked them, we had players at C/G that we liked. But the draft didn't shake our way at that position, and it sucks, but we still got a lot of young promising talent that also fixed big holes. And we didn't give up anything from our future to do that.  Yes, we still have holes, but you can't fix everything in one offseason. Your point was "it is that simple." when it wasn't at all.

You can say that the saftey FA market is cheap, but using Vacarro, an inconsistent saftey with injury problems, is in a different market than some of the other safeties. There's a reason they're unsigned.

Lordy. You asked what I’d do and I gave you everything. You can try and dice apart my posts but I used the draft trade charts and I’m pretty into the draft so I know what usually works. We got less than full value trading down.

Anyway, that’s not the point. It was all hypothetical. So many ways to do what my point was that I’d rather have a G/CB/FA S than CB/Gaulden/Haynes/2019 3rd + other pick(s).

Also, Vaccaro is just an example. Take Reid instead. My point was to pick a vet safety so we have depth and can worry about S next year. Gaulden will never play as much as a 2nd round LG.

Team building is a puzzle. Trains of thought are not necessarily right or wrong, just different. And the fact of the matter is that you can't fill every hole every year. We needed to get faster and more prolific on offense, as well as have legitimate depth at some skill positions. Last season should have taught all of us that. I can't really argue with Hurney about making a WR, CB, Safety and TE our first four picks.

Now, some may argue about the specific choice of player at those positions (and have), but I'm good with even the specific players because the rationale behind the picks are solid in my opinion.

We'll just have to figure the rest out via cuts, the roster, or next offseason via FA and the draft.
