Put some thoughts down here...

TLDR version

There is a big difference in running style between Rookie CMC vs Sophomore CMC. Far less juking and dancing. Far more hitting the hole and relying on speed. I can see now that last year all that dancing was just a lack of confidence. Now his runs are much more deliberate, and it seems effective so far.

Actually, Rookie C-Mac showed progress later in the season for that very reason, and it showed. He figured out that the NFL is not supposed to be Dancing With The Stars. Glad to hear that the light switch has stayed on.

This actually pissed me off quite a bit, and I never get emotional about our coaching decisions normally.

We’ve taken a runner who was very effective at exploiting gaps with patience, quick cuts and acceleration in zone running schemes and put him into a power scheme last year. Then we all scratched our heads as to why he didn’t look as effective as we expected when he was hit within 2 yards on every run. Now we think the answer is to ask him to bulk up and turn him into more of a downfield one cut runner.

Be ****** creative for once and scheme the o line to actually shift and block horizontally to make the most of your top 10 running back. Jesus this is backward thinking.

Yep, agreed. Not sure if it's the incompetent coaching or lack of an effective powerback or effective Oline. But thus far he has NOT been used properly. Makes you wonder what an OC mastermind could do with him.

So glad to hear this. I was so livid last year he tying to juke 4,5,6 times and get taken down.

CMC juking behind the line or between tackles is scary. In open space 1 on 1? That is where is strength lies.

Dude, you do realize Stanford runs a power scheme? They ran quite a bit of power and iso.

You do realize power schemes in Stanford, and mainly in College in general is not the same as the NFL.

They already tried turning Cam into a pure pocket passer minus the runs... didn’t work out so well

When was that?  I must have missed that season.  I know Rivera always talks about limiting Cams carries prior to every season, but that all goes out the window once the bullets start flying.  Hell, didnt Cam have the most carries of his career last year?

Cam is a pure pocket passer who happens to be able to run. If Brees was as big and fast as Cam do you not think his candyass would run the ball?

I think people are making a bit too much of what the coaching staff is saying about McCaffrey's carries vs touches. Ultimately, you want the defense to be afraid of the run every single snap. Once teams start loading the box, it becomes much easier to pick and choose your match-ups on the outside. We absolutely want all our early season opponents to prepare for a run focused attack, but I highly doubt McCaffrey will break 200 carries.

Gettleman’s star may have fallen, but remember how he described CMC....

The best tackle-box runner I’ve ever seen is Curtis Martin when he came out of Pitt,” Gettleman said. “Christian is right there with him. Running in that tackle-box takes unique vision and unique foot quickness. And he’s got it. Curtis Martin had it. He had a great career, a Hall of Fame career. And this kid’s got those kinds of skills.”

Ron Rivera's quote.

Explain please. I'd like to reference this article http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2015-nfl-college-football-power-running-counter-running/ to explain the NFL power blocking scheme. And this play

from Stanford.

Talent wise. A player can have success running a certain way in college and have zero in the NFL. I can easily see CMC being used for power in college. The NFL is the best of the best. I don’t think he should be used majorly as a behind the LOS guy.
