Official Training Camp Thread - Day 2

Daeshon Hall, who was on IR most of his rookie season, gets up slowly after mini-collision. But appears to be OK.

Gilbert is out here throwing frickin lasers.

Damian Parms was not fooled by a crossing route and just broke up a pass. Was a gouda play. A muenster play, even.

CJ Anderson has on so many clothes that it is hard to see him. He told us he would do that for every practice and so far he has.

A huge defensive tackle (Poe or Short) just tipped a screen which CMC still managed to shoestring catch - that big man got UP.

Based on practice reps, Rivera ain't bluffing in regards to the amount t of carries CMC will get.

Alright so KK Short just lept over them mountains to bat down a pass, prompting a gasp from all of us on the sideline. #NoNoNoNotToday

Shaq Thompson nearly picked off Cam Newton. Nearly. Would have been a big gainer for Olsen if this was a game.

Shaq Thompson goes for an interception in the flat, doesn’t come up with it. Greg Olsen with a long gain.

Dezmen Southward picks off Heinicke and runs it back

Dezmen Southward with a leaping interception on a Taylor Heinicke pass - nice play for Southward, who spent 2017 on the practice squad.

Demetrius Cox with a nice strip on Mose Frazier.

Practice ends with a touchdown from Cam to Olsen on a nicely thrown ball from about the 25 - recap coming soon.

Me to DJ Moore yesterday: “How was the first day?” Moore: “Hot...” Me: “What’s it gonna be like with pads on?” Moore: “Even hotter.” No lies here.

meanwhile

This is my sixth year in the NFL - this is how I do training camp.

Crowd around CJ Anderson wants to know why on earth he’s wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants during practice here in Spartanburg. Just a psychological thing - feels lighter when he transitions to being just in pads.

Olsen walks by a group of screaming men, stops for the kiddos. As it should be.

    • Yes. Arm strength is a problem too, but his biggest problems are decision making and accuracy.
    • His work ethic may be a question mark, but I question his ethics in general. The way that he weighed in at the combine and the left immediately while everyone else was throwing. He knew he was conning someone
    • When did I say top 3 picks? Talking about starters who were unsuccessful or sent packing from one team to find more success on another--- Goff? Carr? Geno Smith?  Darnold? Baker?  --heck, if you take those QBs alone (5) you are talking about over 15% of the league.  But you are looking at performance and I am looking at skill set and fit.  What you did not mention is the bust rate for the rookie qbs who are drafted.  Why is that?  Fit and, in my view, opportunity to develop. I know that it is easy to say, "I saw this on TV"  or "but he has only been good for a short amount of time"  well, this process is not a lifetime achievement award.  Darnold was here for a half season--did he ever show the success he did here as he has in Minnesota?  Nope.  So what is the difference?  FIT.  My point?  If Jones is a top 7 QB over the past 3 years when throwing from a clean pocket and here, we will have a top running back room (Hubbard and Brooks), a good young WR room, a good young developing TE, and a veteran, top 5 offensive line--those are the conditions that would make him throw from clean pockets.  That is all I am saying--did I give him a gold jacket?  I said it was risky.  So is drafting a QB.  I also mentioned other ways our team could improve. But you decide to put words in my mouth and then argue against those words.  Brilliant.
