Jets open to trading Bridgewater - potential backup?

One year deal or not.  If we wait he'll be cut.  Teams that are shopping someone are thinking of ways to get rid of him and get something in return.  The distraction it could bring might not be worth keeping him around.   If Darnold starts don't you think Bridgewater will have something to say.  I do.

If they are shopping him they are considering cutting him too.

He's a good guy and someone out there should be smart enough to snag him for a starting role. We aren't those people, the money is better spent elsewhere.

He hasn't played meaningful football in two years. So no, he won't be snagged for a starting role. that's not how football works, certainly not at QB.

like if we really want a backup with substantial experience, both in the regular season and playoffs, there's a healthy option just sitting by the phone.....

Man I think Jake Delhomme is a little past his prime

I'm betting he'll be starting games before the end of this season. Might even be for the Jets.

All bets are off, though, if the reason they want to trade him turns out to be that knee never rehabbed properly.

And yeah, it does happen.

You said hadn't played a meaningful game in two years, not sat out. There's a difference.

Aaron Rodgers rode the pine for three years before taking over for Brett Favre. No meaningful games in that span.

Heck, Jake Delhomme rode the bench for his entire career with the Saints (barring two trips to NFLEurope), before coming to Carolina and taking over starting duties pretty quickly.

Michael Vick spent 21 months in federal prison (now that is deeply benched) before signing with Philadelphia Eagles and then producing his best statistical year the following season.

Roger Staubach served in the US Navy from 1965 until early 1969 (including a tour in Vietnam) before joining the Dallas Cowboys.

Three out of four of those have played in Super Bowls, two of them winning and taking home Super Bowl MVP honors.

Shall we go on? I mean, I've just scratched the surface of easy name recognition players here. There are literally tons of guys that have either rode the bench or completely sat out the game for a minimum of two years before getting a chance to play in a meaningful game.

Edit to add: It is just amazing that it can be exactly how football works.

Edit to add, again: Kurt Warner ... sheesh, another easy one who spent 1995- 1997 stocking grocery shelves and part timing it with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League, before getting picked up by the Rams (and being sent to NFLEurope to play alongside Jake Delhomme). He eventually got his shot to start, won a Super Bowl and picked up the Super Bowl MVP as well. He also QB'ed the Arizona Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance.

Oh for god’s sake.

rodgers was a rookie. He didn’t start then take seasons off: he never started. That’s disingenuous as poo.

Delhomme played all over the place prior to 2003. He was a random journeyman qb who found a spot. That’s a whole lot different than a guy missing two seasons after his Femur slid down into his tibia.

Warner didn’t get a contract until he was 27, then the next year won the super bowl. And again that was just a miracle situation all around.

Staubach lol. Really stretching there aren’t you?

vick is the only really applicable situation, considering he was an established starter who missed time for...reasons...then came back and had some success again.

Outside of that your examples are a literal Hollywood miracle story, a dude that handed the ball off forty times a game, and someone from 60 years ago.

Journeymen catch on to places all the time.

Thats hardly the same thing as teddy nearly having his leg amputated after dropping back, missing two seasons, then being traded from the jets to become a starter

None of those guys was signed as the starter which is what Bridgewater wants at this point.. Delhomme was back up to Peete. Warner was the backup to Trent Green. Vick was brought in as a backup to McNabb (http://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=4397938).
