Rivera now saying it would be "ideal" for McCaffrey to have 25-30 touches per game

My point is that 25-30 touches/game is 40-50% of our offense.

When viewed from that perspective, I think that it sounds even more unrealistic, and not only in terms of Anderson, but everyone else.

I'll truly believe it when I see it.

This guy here_ gives specific context

"The NFL all-time leader in touches for a single-season is James Wilder, who had 492 touches for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. That’s an average of 30.75 touches over 16 games, and this is the guy that has more than anyone in NFL history. Since 2007, only DeMarco Murray (2014) is the top 35 in all-time leaders in touches. He had 449, good for an average of 28.06 touches per 16 games. And in 2017, Le’Veon Bell led the NFL with 406 touches, for an average of 25.4 touches per 16 games."

"The New England Patriots led the NFL in amount of offensive plays in 2017, for an average of 67.5 plays per game. The Panthers averaged 64.5 plays per game. 2018 offensive plays per game projections from friend of the program David Spracale has the Panthers at 62.54 plays per game."

"Rivera’s statement is essentially saying that the McCaffrey will get touches on 40%+ of the Panthers’ plays. This is a team with Cam Newton at quarterback; Newton had 139 carries himself in 2017 for an average of 8.69 carries per game. The idea of McCaffrey getting this many touches in the Panthers’ is nowhere close to realistic, regardless of how 'ideal' Rivera considers it."

Yep...#22 will get more touches, but he will also be used a bunch in play action/misdirection.

That misdirection play against the Pats last year was a thing of beauty...the whole Pats D followed CMC right and Fozzie went left and burned them for a TD on a screen. One of the few times I praised Shula.

I freaked out when I saw that play. Everyone at the bar was wondering what I was so excited about. When they showed the replay everyone's mouth was open. Such an amazing play. Can't think of anything like it.

EDIT: And that play was partially set up by the touches he got in the games leading up to that.

Maybe we won't pull a Shula and wait until 10 on the playclock to call plays this year. With Norv, I think the tempo increases this season which will allow for more opportunities for touches.

Assuming we can have 65 plays/game on offense (that aren't punts/field goals), I think 25 touches (~17 runs, ~8 receptions) for CMC and 15 touches (~12 runs, ~3 receptions) for CJ is doable. That would still leave Cam with about 35 pass attempts + runs.

Regardless, we have a lot of ways to be creative on offense this year, but I think CMC needs to at least be on the field way more than he was last year to keep defenses guessing. When Stewart was out there, he was practically no threat of receiving a pass.
