Lose Norwell and run up the middle even more?

The last 8 games when he got more carries he averaged 4.7ypc. Better than Stew has been for us in years.

Your math skills suck. But I think the comparison lies in their style. They're both patient -wait for the hole- hesitation style runners.

What about those numbers is incorrect? And I’ve seen every snap Bells career and CMC has shown nothing to compare to Bell running from the backfield. Where are all these plays(in the NFL) that show CMC is anything similar to Bell? Bell has numerous carries where he has to deal with defenders in the backfield. The difference is, Bell can get out of some of those situations.

how many of those runs were up the middle?

I have no specific stats but would also be curious about that. I just remember that he passed the eye test on runs up the middle against Atlanta (first matchup), Miami, NY, and GB.

If he wants that he should have paid Norwell.

If we can't scheme around having a decent G, when we have a franchise QB, tons of talent on offense, and a good to great defense, then we don't deserve to win games.

There aren't many teams who pay their G's like we paid Trai, and we certainly couldn't have afforded the Norwell contract..as much as I would have liked him to stay.  It was pay Trai or pay Norwell, and we chose Trai.  (likely the wrong choice if I'm being honest)

Panthers coach Ron Rivera told ESPN.com he wouldn’t be surprised if McCaffrey reached 200 carries this season. That matches what Rivera said in June, when he said he’s looking forward to seeing McCaffrey run between the tackles more, as he did in college.

McCaffrey is looking bigger and stronger (and sexier) this offseason, which might help him carry a bigger load. Although C.J. Anderson has arrived and will take over some of the running workload, McCaffrey is likely to be the starting running back.

Running between the tackles is fine but there has a got to be holes to run through. Our run blocking has got to be better in order for Christian to be effective as he's not a guy thats going to break a lot of tackles.

True, but last year's problems had as much to do with personnel and scheme than blocking.  Our offense didn't have much of a deep threat, so defenses could keep 9-10 guys within 10 yards of the LOS, which clogged things up for our RB's.  Also, the scheme tended to run receivers across the middle which brought more defenders there...all while running both backs straight up the gut and into the teeth of those defenders.

This year, I expect Norv to do a better job of spreading defenses out and giving our backs more space to work.  We also have receivers now with the speed to go deep and bring the safeties with them, which again, will open thing up underneath.  I also have faith/hope that M. Kalil holds his own at LT, so along with the return of R. Kalil to heath, our OL should improve or at least be solid (even if there is a decline at LG).

Yeah, but if you design plays that unclog the middle, there should be more space to run up the middle than there was last year.  And some people are confusing running between the tackles with running up the middle.  While they can be the same thing, it's not always true.  Stewart, for example, was a run up the middle guy.  Just give him the ball, and let him bull his way for yards.

CMC, on the other hand, is a patience and vision between the tackles runner.  By that I mean he takes the handoff and waits patiently until he sees a gap and explodes through it.  Last year the problem was that Shula used CMC the same way he used Stewart...a straight up the gut and bull your way for yards style.  So it didn't work .  He even admitted that it wasn't until late in the year that he started to figure out how to use CMC, and that's one of the reasons his efficiency went up as the year went on.

I look for Norv to spread the defense out more and call plays that keep them off balance better than we saw with Shula.  So, that alone should improve our run game, despite the loss of Norwell.
