REPORT: TE Chris Manhertz has severe injury

Panthers TE Chris Manhertz (Jones fracture) will begin training camp on the active/PUP list.

Manhertz has a broken left foot. He was injured in June's minicamp. The Panthers are "hopeful" Manhertz will be ready for Week 1, which isn't the same thing as saying he will be ready for Week 1. Manhertz has been slated for No. 2/blocking duties with Ed Dickson departed for Seattle.

Carolina Panthers backup tight end Chris Manhertz will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list with the same injury that sidelined starting tight end Greg Olsen for much of the 2017 season.

Manhertz underwent surgery this summer after sustaining a Jones fracture in his left foot, general manager Marty Hurney said Tuesday. The Panthers are hopeful Manhertz, who was injured during minicamp last month, will be ready to return before the start of the regular season.

Manhertz, 26, played in all 16 regular-season games in 2017 as a blocking tight end behind Olsen and Ed Dickson, who signed with Seattle during the offseason. Olsen was limited to a career-low seven games last season after breaking his right foot during a Week 2 victory over Buffalo.

I'm sure we can do better.

Well, the good news is, this forces our often conservative coaches to fast track Ian Thomas.

I saw a tweet from Jourdan Rodrigue that confirms Thomas was up in Baltimore with Cam and the receivers.  Great to hear that. At this point Thomas needs all the reps possible.

I'm guessing that while the hope is to slot Thomas in at TE2, we'll probably have to bring in another TE for depth.

Any possibilities?
