Tepper Presser Takeaways

More to the point though, he's not a super polished political type.  He says what he thinks, to the point where he's even willing to mildly call somebody out for asking a dumb question.

He sounds almost unprepared, and I think that's deliberate.  He isn't bringing well crafted remarks.  He's talking directly from his own thoughts.

Sounds like a certain someone who this country is all too familiar with these days...

1. "What was, was. This is now."

Probably the most important quote from the day. Tepper just bought a used franchise, and he has no interest at all in talking about what the previous owner did with it. It is his now, time to move forward. Any media hoping to get more juicy details into JR's behavior will be disappointed.

2. Practice facility is happening. His most definitive language was used in regards to this. Look for an indoor practice field that can also be used for other functions.  Long overdue. It is silly that the team still has to practice at a hotel ball room when weather is bad. Embarrassing.

3. Tepper is a straight shooter. He did not have to say that he is under contract to keep the statue. He could have simply said it will stay. But, he chose to give all the info. Apparently, all the talk about open communication and transparency is not just lip service.

4. He is a Spiderman fan. This shows good taste in comics. If he would have gone Superman, I would have many concerns.

5. The Charlotte sports media was there in full force today. However, come the last days of training camp there will be 4 or 5 media types out there with me. We deserve better.

6. A team President will be named soon. He said he has two people in mind already. Look for it to be done before camp.

The gambling comment was concerning IMO, legalized gambling will only help the NFL. I would love to hear the thought process behind that one.

Liked the talk about the practice facility too, but even more so liked the overarching emphasis that the team doesn't need to "fall behind" in any area. Seems as though Tepper's going to make sure the Panthers have the best of everything.

Gotta admit, in that vein, he sounds a lot like...

Eeeehhhh, I can't bring myself to say it :fear:

Yeah, but there's giving the team the best of everything within reason in order to make them better, and then there's being an interfering ass-hat who tries to run the team like it's his own private plaything.

I like him, as I enjoyed that entire presser. He’s direct, to the point, and through his unpolished talk, you can tell he has a big heart. You can tell he’s going to genuinely care about not only us, the fans, but he’s going to do things in support of the players in that locker room and the employees on the business side.

I’ve been down on the panthers, and football in general, for a little while now. He gives me hope and has brought back some excitement. I’m looking forward to the season, and looking forward to see the changes he makes to better my home football team.

Im already talking to my fiancé about moving to South Carolina, to live in the potential residential area where the practice field could be lol

A couple points that I thought were large:

he mentioned MLS again.

He mentioned it in a statement about use of public funds for future use vs his own. He basically said if I bring something that will bring in tax revenue from outside the region it should be a split revenue. He emphasized outside the region and tourist taxes specifically I believe.  He said a partnership.

I think Voth thought it was funny (I did too)

I actually think Darin Gantt took a bit of a slap to the face with Tepper talking about how "some of you people always wanna focus on the negative stuff" after his question.

My thoughts exactly.

Definitely a breath of fresh air to have an owner that understands the value of fans and is all about winning. It feels like a new beginning for the franchise.

When Bill Voth asked about the team president search and said what are you looking for in the next guy and the triggered woman next to him felt the need to add or woman had me dying.

Get over yourself. At least Tepper laughed it off.

One other note that Gantt quoted, with interesting wording.

When discussing the staff, Tepper said " I appreciate some of the changes that were made on that staff," taking time to specifically mention new OC Norv Turner as someone that he liked.

Now, I take that more to mean that he liked Norv Turner being brought aboard, but yeah it could also conceivably be seen as a shot at Mike Shula.

Realistically though, Tepper is only recently becoming familiar with the staff, so it seems less likely he'd take a shot at former staff.  No reason to.

Regardless, make of it what you will.

Look out guys, Z is about to have a corner office at the new office facility next to Carolwinds.  Just ensure in your contract that Jort wearing is acceptable, do it for the people

Gonna go out on a limb and predict Jort wearing will be not only be acceptable but encouraged.

    • Yes. Arm strength is a problem too, but his biggest problems are decision making and accuracy.
    • His work ethic may be a question mark, but I question his ethics in general. The way that he weighed in at the combine and the left immediately while everyone else was throwing. He knew he was conning someone
    • When did I say top 3 picks? Talking about starters who were unsuccessful or sent packing from one team to find more success on another--- Goff? Carr? Geno Smith?  Darnold? Baker?  --heck, if you take those QBs alone (5) you are talking about over 15% of the league.  But you are looking at performance and I am looking at skill set and fit.  What you did not mention is the bust rate for the rookie qbs who are drafted.  Why is that?  Fit and, in my view, opportunity to develop. I know that it is easy to say, "I saw this on TV"  or "but he has only been good for a short amount of time"  well, this process is not a lifetime achievement award.  Darnold was here for a half season--did he ever show the success he did here as he has in Minnesota?  Nope.  So what is the difference?  FIT.  My point?  If Jones is a top 7 QB over the past 3 years when throwing from a clean pocket and here, we will have a top running back room (Hubbard and Brooks), a good young WR room, a good young developing TE, and a veteran, top 5 offensive line--those are the conditions that would make him throw from clean pockets.  That is all I am saying--did I give him a gold jacket?  I said it was risky.  So is drafting a QB.  I also mentioned other ways our team could improve. But you decide to put words in my mouth and then argue against those words.  Brilliant.
