I disagree but that is based on my extreme dislike for the server pay system. Gratuity is not nor should it be voluntary to pay an employee that is underpaid. I mean, what other industry works on a system where the customer voluntarily and DIRECTLY decides an employee's wages?

Just because you don't like the way it's setup here in the US, doesn't mean you shouldn't follow the rules.

You are punishing the server, not the restaurant industry, owner of the restaurant, managers, etc...the one who has the least to lose.

My suggestion, either go to places where the waitstaff are paid the way they do in Europe, stay home, or go to fast food places where they are guaranteed minimum wage.

If you are 100% committed to the service industry, are good at it, and comfortable working the odd hours - if you can find a good establishment to work in, you can make a very good living for yourself. I’ll never go back to it though. It’s almost like a lifestyle. It’s a tough gig but the world absolutely needs bartenders especially good ones.

I have never worked in the service industry. I had thought about doing bartending on the side years ago but I saw the "lifestyle" that most of them lived and it just wasn't for me. It looked fun for sure, but just not something I think I could do full time.

It's just a crap thing to do, service quality be damned.

For some people, their heroes can be as shitty a person as walks the green earth and those people will still defend Mr. Hero to their dying breath.

You are missing the point of what I was saying. If a server gives extremely bad service, why should I have to foot the bill for their pay that you claim is "owed?" You are right, I am not the owner or the manager but I also have complete control of what I fork out in gratuity. Much like the responsibility for pay is now shifted to the consumer, so is the merit system, right? If you suck at your job, I am not going to pay you. It would be the same thing if I owned a regular business. You suck, I fire you.

The alternative is to pay food-service workers a living wage, which would drive up the price of dining out pretty significantly. I'm willing to pay more (though I admit, I don't eat out that much), but I'm willing to bet most are not. It's unfortunate, but that's the way the economy works. As someone else said, the alternative is to eat at home or do cheap fast food. Dining out is a luxury, imo, which is why I don't do it that often, but nowadays, it seems like most folks think of it as a routine thing.

I had fun doing it. It’s something every person should do for at least a year of their life. It’s like living in a dorm. You better yourself doing it. I learned a lot when I worked at a successful and busy restaurant. I got cultured the hard way. You learn about wine, how to serve it properly, you strengthen your table manners/etiquette, you can develop social skills and learn how to eat out like a gentleman and a civilized person not like a Neanderthal. I mean in this thread alone some bozo is talking about how he will ask for a mop to clean up after his kid. That is absurd and embarrassing.

The proper response to poor service is to buy the restaurant and fire the server.

fug him and fug the whiny bitch server who's apparently never gotten stiffed before and wants attention for it.

Basically this. Getting stiffed is part of the game. Best thing you can do is try and develop your profiling skills and get a better read on people so that you can flip that table as quickly as possible.

Problem with the "bad service" argument is that a lot of times the bad service could be a reflection of several variables.  Could be: server is covering another section for someone who called in sick, or the kitchen is fuging up, or anything really.

Goddamn, some people's tipping mindset is so fuged up.

Wished tipping wasn't a thing, and servers got paid like everyone else.  And tipping would only be for extraordinary service.  That said, being a former server myself.  20% is my minimum. I usually go 30-40%.  These are people's livelihoods.  But of course, I realize I am the soft-hearted man.

It would absolutely drive up the prices of food but I am not sure I buy into the idea that it would be very significant. That would end up being a case by case basis, IMO. I dined and drank in Ontario plenty of times and their servers do receive a minimum wage. I didn't think the food was noticeably more expensive than comparable restaurants that I have been to in the US.

I agree it is a luxury, however. I would wager that the frequency of eating out has gone up tremendously over the past 30-50 years.
