You give a $15 tip to the Domino's guy? I've worked as a pizza delivery driver several different times. Back in the day $1 or $2 was great. Now I think $5 is standard. But $15? Really? Hat's off to you man.

I delivered pizza in the early 1990's (back when you had to get it there in 30 minutes or it was free).

You knew a good tip was coming when you could smell the ganja as you were approaching the door.

Meh. For the most part, I’ll tip at 20% but there have been times I’ve only did 13 and 15 percent. Really depends on the service. If I tip less than 15%, I generally don’t go back there.

Now, for those saying things such as, “if you can’t afford to tip or tip at this %, you shouldn’t be eating out” or any of the other stuff in here, then I say you need to put yourself in the shoes of both. I guess I’ll take up for the tipper. That man or women might want to take his or her family out, and knows he/she can’t afford it, but damnit, he feels his family deserves a treat every once in awhile too. He knows he can’t really afford it, but he’s going to take his family out. That man can afford to pay for the meal, and that’s it. He shouldn’t break himself completely to apply a 20% tip.

I’ve been in similar situations growing up. Pop takes us out to the movies or to a ball game, knowing he can barely afford to get these tickets but he gets it and he wants his little boy to get a hot dog because he’s begging for one and wants his boy to enjoy the full ballgame experience.

I’m not saying everyone who tips poorly is like this, as a good portion who tip poorly are just a**holes, but not every situation is black and white. Sometimes it’s a lot deeper than “he didn’t pay 20% on his tip, he’s a poohead and shouldn’t be eating out.”

Yes I do.  That extra $5 - $10 is not a big deal to me....but it lets the delivery person know that I appreciate them.

hey...small price to pay for me being to lazy to fix my own meal.

He can be an arrogant Willie Beamon as long as he locks down receivers.

He needs to know being cocky, arrogant, a poohead, etc comes with a price though. The moment he fugs up, folks will be on his a**.

We had a philanthropist, good guy shut down corner, who probably tips well. Got rid of him *shrugs*

If a restaurant ever really wanted to have a server's back, they would at least pay minimum wage.

If they do that they’ll just raise the prices.  Tips are essentially a sales commission.  Good waiters/waitresses/bartenders make more than bad ones and I’m okay with that.

Always heard the word “tips” was actually an acronym meaning To Insure Perfect Service.  Don’t know if that’s actually true but I like the logic behind it. Bad service = bad/no tip but I do agree that customers shouldn’t punish servers for kitchen or staffing level issues.

I can understand the logic here, but I do not agree with it.

That server may have a kid at home too.  Or rent coming up.  Or a past due electric bill.

You stiff him on a $125 check, and his world just got even harder.  He may have to tip out both the bartender and the busboy, pay taxes on what he didn't even earn, and has lost a table...which means he not only didn't make any money off of poor old Pop's...he lost money from the table that would have been there otherwise.

If money is tough to come by, you absolutely DO NOT NEED to be eating out.  But if you must, bring in coupons.  Go to "kids eat free nights" etc....but don't forget to tip on what the food cost should have been, not what it actually comes out to.

There are plenty of restaurants where the staff don't rely on tips, I would suggest to anyone that needs to eat out, but can't afford the tip to go there instead.

Also, this isn't a poor vs. rich thing.  Some of the worst tippers have the most money, and some of the best can barely afford the power bill.
