Tipping actually has a racist history. After slaves were set free a lot of them worked in the food service industry as waiters/waitresses. The owners didn’t want to pay them an hourly wage so they told their rich customers to tip them instead.

The 'bad service" argument doesn't really seem to be supported by his social media response.

He could have easily said something like "I got bad service" instead of "be glad you got five dollars".

Actually that does seem to support it. Could be he didn't want to out right say she is bad so that she doesn't lose her job and just told her to be glad she got 5 dollars. We don't really know the situation, but you can always tell the character of someone who throws dirty laundry out for everyone to see.

How exactly do you ignore something and learn from it?

My basic rule is 20% and go from there. You'd have to be pretty deliberately awful for me to leave 5%. Like Karen wanting to talk to the manager bad if 5% is where I've landed. Also, the comment that you had $5 more than before shows it was intentional and not just I don't know how to tip.

Maybe the service was poor. Dont know the whole story, but there is no reason to post this. Some people will leave nothing. Some people feel they are already getting paid so tipping is a bonus. Not everyone tips but their is no reason to roast a person for not tipping more at least he gave something. People spend their money on what they want to. By the way I do tip but only tip good if service is good.

For some people “good service” is unattainable.

Yeah, like the people who put a stack of ones on the table and take one off every time their standards aren't met. They're taking half of those ones off the table regardless, so fug em.

Basically this. Getting stiffed is part of the game. Best thing you can do is try and develop your profiling skills and get a better read on people so that you can flip that table as quickly as possible.

In response to whoever referenced stereotypes about black people tipping on the first page: I've also found an extraordinary amount of prejudice in the service industry wrt tipping. people create self fulfilling prophecies all the time. Oh no a black table, they're gonna stiff me! Not bothering with that table

*gives bad service*

*gets a bad tip*

UGH BLACK PEOPLE RIGHT

It's pervasive and ugly and essentialist. Some of the most lavish tips I've ever gotten have been from black people and some of the shittiest from white people. Race has nothing to do with it. Tipping is positively correlated with class and to some extent age and occupation and nothing else.

Jackson may just be a total chode

9 pages?!  Yes, it sure is the peak of the off-season. I guess I'm glad Dante gave us something to talk about.

Wake me up when it's training camp!

But yeah, agree with all those thinking some of our vets will have a quiet word with Jackson about this.  The tip is bad.  His tweet makes it even worse.

That was me. “African Americans are bad tippers” is a stereotype that I have seen to be true and untrue during my time in the service industry. There were def white servers who didn’t want to wait on black people where I worked. I don’t think it was because they didn’t like black folks, I think it was because they were concerned about wasting their time and getting stiffed. I wasn’t fan of waiting on white people who I perceived to be as “rednecks” or trashy. I could usually tell by the way they talked to me or how they carried theirselves when they were eating. Usually bad tippers if they tipped at all.

From what I've read, team sale should close this week.

Regardless of what you look like - people who have never worked in the service industry, and are the furthest thing from a culinary and dining critic are usually the first people to pass judgement on service and have unrealistic expectations which usually means they are horrible tippers. Everyone reading this thread can probably relate to this if you have worked in SI - you all have a friend that has never set foot in a kitchen and expects the bartender or waitress to kiss their ass, flirt with them, and give all their attention to them and the minute these unrealistic expectations aren’t set the meter starts running on their tip calculator.

lol... "gratuities" for "the house" have existed for almost as long as human beings have existed.

Especially if it was a comely wench doing the serving for "the house".

Regardless if the waiter did a great job and was 100% stiffed by Jackson and had a legit beef to call him out, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get fired. Just the way it works. Bad pub for the establishment.
