Yes, and that "point" is ridiculously stupid and wrong.

What's your reasoning behind thinking that because someone has supreme athletic ability and physical skills, that they are necessarily an appropriate role model for children? Just because someone can throw a ball far or run fast does not mean that they should be looked up to. If your point was that athletes embody principles of hard work, dedication, and community service-- then you would have a valid point (see: JJ Watt, Cam Newton, Torrey Smith, etc).

Yeah I'm definitely not reading that the same way you are. I've never debated that all athletes are good role models. They aren't - just like all parents aren't. I'm debating whether it's good/bad for athletes to be role models at all and if parents are bad for letting them be.

What I find dumb is your response to a valid criticism:

Quote

If your kids need football players as role models, you're failing as a parent

If your kid looks up to Cam Newton, cool. But it should be just because he's incredibly athletic. Aldon Smith is a great athlete, but he shouldn't be your (not you specifically) kid's role model. But you are failing as a parent IMO if the only reason your kid looks up to a Cam Newton or a JJ Watt is because they want to be like them based solely on the merits of their athletic ability.

Just playing devils advocate here, and I could care less about anything Cam does on social media, all I care about is what he does on Sunday’s. But, for the sake of argument to your statement, Cam specifically has made it a point to be a role model to children. So, with that said, can he justifiably be scrutinized for his social media posts? Granted, most little kids don’t have social media (5-8 year olds), but I think 11+ year olds probably do?

You're only failing as a parent if you're not the primary role model for your children to raise them correctly. You're not failing as a parent if your kid plays a sport and thinks a professional athlete of that sport is a role model for the way they want to play the game. Kids have role models outside of their parents and for various reasons. I work with Cam's foundation HE CALLS HIMSELF A ROLE MODEL because he is.

Do you think him swearing is something an 11 year with a social media account is unprepared to see? Do you think it will have any negative impact on them? And if you do, wouldn't the solution not be policing a grown man's conduct from a football message board and instead being a parent and not allowing an impressionable kid to have a social media account where they can be exposed to much more disturbing and damaging content?

Finally, do you think Cam swearing negates or lessens the good he does through his foundation or through his other social media posts where he acknowledges the mistakes he made in his past and how he's moved forward and grown to become a better man and a better athlete as well?

You can scrutinize his posts all you want and hold whatever opinion, but I just find it dumb that people get all up in arms about it on a football message board.

And to @TheRed's point, what exactly is the difference between Cam swearing in a social media post vs. the antics of a Gronk or Brady swearing at officials-- both players widely considered as a lovable goof and a fiery competitor?

I agree, but all of this faux outrage is (IMO) an abdication of parental responsibility. YOU should be your kids role model first and foremost. To me your response: "Good call. Let’s tell the Make A Wish Foundation to go ahead and shut it down." to a valid criticism is juvenile and reductionist.

Of course parents should always be the primary role model. That's common sense.

Saying parents allowing kids to have athletes as role model makes them bad parents isn't a valid criticism and is completely false.

Hey, you have some valid points. Like I said I’m not scrutinizing anyone. I don’t have kids so everyone should parent the way they want to parent. I was just trying to get your take on it simply because he has said he is a role model. But no, I don’t believe it lessens what he’s done. I mean there’s kids stuff and there’s adult stuff. And kids are going to hear adult things at some point whether it’s their favorite sports player or some dude at the mall cursing. Thanks for answering.

Except thats not what @LinvilleGorge said, only that you are a bad parent if your kid needs football players as role models. And from your previous response, I think you would agree.

Kids do need role models outside of the home. I hope mine play sports and I absolutely have no problem if they look to athletes in those sports as role models. At some point if those athletes' behaviors don't mesh with how I raise my kids, then as the primary role model I'll talk to them about it and use it as a teaching moment.

From his post this would mean I am a bad parent. I strongly disagree with his generalizing statement. So I made one that was equally as ridiculous.
