While the Carolina Panthers are still waiting for recent early-round draft picks Shaq Thompson, Devin Funchess, Vernon Butler and James Bradberry to take off, the youngster with the highest ceiling on the roster is 2017 No. 8 overall pick Christian McCaffrey. 

The pass-catching running back out of Stanford wasn't bad as a rookie. Only 13 NFL players caught more passes than him (80) and he averaged 4.7 yards per carry while scoring a handful of touchdowns in the second half of the season. He also had 117 yards on 12 touches in a playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints. 

But that came after McCaffrey averaged an abysmal 2.4 yards per carry while scoring just twice in the first eight games of the year. Maybe growing pains were a factor at the age of 21, so if he can pick up in 2018 where he left off in 2017, the former Heisman Trophy runner-up could become a star behind Cam Newton.

I think Shaq is the most likely candidate to break out along with McCaffery

Man these first round picks having to be developed is the biggest crock of poo this team tells is every year. First rounders should contribute right away. Watching shaq and Butler waste time is mindnumbing

Their second position makes a lot more sense. CMC really did look like a different player in the latter part of the season. A lot of rookies hit the “rookie wall” late in the season but CMC just kept getting better.

Rookies do have to be developed but the issue with guys like Shaq and Butler is that they were drafted while playing probablybour two deepest positions. There simply wasn’t a lot of snaps available for them and it likely stunted their development.

You'd think they'd be able to push into the lineups more that they have. Like I forget Butlers even on the team on game days. They arnt showing out when they do get those opportunities. That's the problem look at the eagles D that's deep. Those rotating players showed out. Our two first rounders arnt.

Shaq is behind a potential hall of famer....

Butler is also behind a top 5 player at his position in Short...

Guys the playing time is not an issue so long as KK / TD are playing at a high level, our depth in the areas we are best at stays strong it's a concept lost on many of you, injuries can decimate a position group. 

We at the least have depth at the positions we're best and built to play around, not many teams can have a guy like TD miss four games and potentially not skip a beat, or even see better production with Shaq starting. 

Same for KK, most teams can't replace their star 3 techs on the DL if an injury sidelines them with comparable ability. Who's gonna fill in for Fletcher Cox, Gerald McCoy, or Aaron Donald (They had to spend 14 mill for Suh just this off-season, but Goff is on a rookie deal)

Our team is built from the inside out on defense the most important pieces are the ones closest to the QB, and we can't play how we play without depth in that department given the nature of the game.

I don't think you're paying attention.

Butler has shown flashes when he's been in, he consistently gets pressure and disrupts the QB.

When Shaq is in and TD is out there isn't a significant drop off in talent, just experience.

Butler is a first round pick, showing "flashes" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of his ability. Stop making excuses for a player that should be a lot better than he's been. Shaq I agree is a better pick than Butler but he's still not as good as I expected. I pay attention and he's out of position in plays way more than he should be. Just watch the three NO games.
