NHL Draft 2018

Hanifin and Lindholm trades to Calgary.

Canes get Dougie Hamilton, Ferland, and Fox.

Hamilton is a sure fire 1st pairing defenseman and is an upgrade over Hanifin.  Ferland is a 20 goal scorer and reminds me of Ruutu.  Fox is a defenseman prospect who is playing for Harvard next year but wasn’t likely to sign with Calgary.  Hear he’s a good prospect and could play in the pros in year or two.

Seems like an even trade. If Fox signs with us then it’s a win for us. Hate to see Both go but they didn’t want to sign their RFA contracts. Don’t see them improving much since they will again be in Peter’s system.

Tavares is down to 5 teams and we are not one of them.  We will be going for a Dman and a goalie and there are plenty other UFA out there who will cost less than 10mil/yr

He did say that he's going to talk to an additional 2-3 teams.  So, there is a chance however unlikely.

We do need a 1-2 line center badly.  Those don't come cheaply.  If Tavares was at least partially interested, I'd throw 10 million at him.  He would significantly upgrade the roster.  ROR is another possibility and would be a lot cheaper.

As for D-men, we can keep Hamilton, Peace, and Faulk on the right side.  Left side isn't as easy.  I doubt Bean will be ready for this year.  So we have Slavin and Fleury.  TVR is the wildcard.  If he resigns and we keep Faulk then he may need to play on his off side.

The goalie UFA market isn't awesome.  I say throw a 3 year contract at the Blues backup, try to trade the big man or send him to Charlotte, sign Cam to a team friendly short term deal, and pray Ned is ready in a year or two to make the transition.

Tavares isn't happening.  There are plenty other FA out there. James Neal, JVR, Paul Statsny (lowkey maybe the best fit), Tyler Bozak.  I would love to get Hutton.  I think they're expecting a bounce back year from Darling, as he had a lot of stuff going on last offseason and was not in shape coming in.

With that said they also know they can't afford another year of below average goaltending being the reason they're not in the playoffs.  Which has absolutely been the case the past 2 years regardless of the fact that their roster is so young and lacks consistent scoring....with league average goaltending...this team is in a wildcard spot both past two seasons.  So while a player like Tavares would have them as an instant East contender...they don't need to break the bank to get in the middle of the heat in the Metro.

Svechnikov himself is going to provide a lot of that scoring.  I hope they keep TVR, trade Faulk for a C or a G, and pick up one more decently priced right handed D man and a C/G whatever they don't get in the trade.  Skinner I can go either way on, although keeping him would be strange on all sides after all of this trade talk.

Looking at the roster now my guess on lineup is

TT   Aho     Zykov

skinner   Stall.   Svechnikov

williams.   Necas.   Ferland

martinook.  Rask.    McGinn

possibles: PDG, Foegle, Kuokkanen, Roy, Saarela, Gauthier, Maenalanen

Slavin.   Pesce

Fleury.     Hamilton

TVR.        Faulk

Possibilities: Bean, Fora, McKeown

Darling.    FA

possibilities: Nedeljkovic

So, the center position is a series weakness. Necas might not be ready for the NHL and/or playing center. Plus if anyone gets hurt, the next option is probably Roy, Saarela, or Kuokkanen. All have minimal NHL experience. We are going to have to address this through a trade or FA.

I’m not as concerned about the wings. We have a lot of organizational depth here.

As for the defense, if we keep TVR and Faulk we will probably be fine, but if we don’t keep one or both then we will have to address it.

Goalies,  we need a FA or get one through a trade.

Looking forward to the developmental camp this week. Would like to see if Bean and Necas have developed since last year.

First day of Camp

Necas looks for real. Guy has put on at least 15 lbs. had the most highlight plays. Is easily a top 9 forward.

Svech looks the part. Great skater and passer. Seems to have a good presence with Necas. Also saw him joking with Fox.

Bean looks like the real deal. Great skater and bigger than I expected. Should see some time in NHL next year.

Fox looks like the real deal. Great skater. Not ready for this year but could play in the NHL next year. A tad small.

Thank you for this. The Canes don't get much love on here unfortunately.

Side question, do you happen to post on hfboards?
