But it does. We'll be replacing them with cheaper players, so it DOES free up cap space.

Shaq will actually be making about $2.5M more under his 5th year option next year than TD is going to make this year so we're definitely not saving any money there at OLB. I know TD is talking about playing another season already, but given the roughly $6.5M jump in cap hit for Shaq next year, if TD comes back it's going to have to be on a VERY team friendly deal.

We should get cheaper at center, but on the OL as a whole Williams will probably either be getting a new contract or he'll be playing under the tag next season and Matt Kalil's cap hit nearly doubles from $6.9M to $12.9M. Ryan has a $9.9M cap hit this season so between the extra $6M for Matt and whatever we'll likely have to pay another center plus the contract situation with Williams, we'll probably be spending more on the OL as a whole next season compared to this season.

Thanks for the numbers. I hadn't realized Shaq's contract would jump so much. Appreciate the correction.

In today's NFL RT is as important as LT.  Teams are changing their rushing philosophies and not pressuring the LT as much as years past. They've switched it up and are coming straight at that RT.  In the Saints wild card game Williams was worked bad. Kalil didn't give a single sack and only a couple if pressures.  Cam Jordan moved to the right side and worked Williams.

I don't think he's a bad RT but he's not top money worthy either.

My thoughts exactly he got worked and gave up several pressures late in the game on a crucial drive Jordan moved to his side and abused him 2 times in a row. Nearly sacking cam and ruining both pass plays.

Let him prove he deserves top money this year.

I didn’t either until I looked it up. I knew it jumped quite a bit but woah.

Shaq better take advantage of his opportunity and play at a reasonably high level or we may not be exercising that option. He has to prove he can cover TEs and RBs at a consistently high level because he’s not going to rush much and is average, at best, against the run. And believe he is capable, but the unknown is doing it from a different position. One which I think benefits Shaq. No more covering speedy slot WRs.

Point being, almost 10M is a lot for a 4-3 OLB. He’s gotta prove it n the first month that he’s capable of being that guy.

That ship has sailed. We’ve already picked up his 5th year option.

It is only guaranteed in case of injury. Like not being able to pass a physical at the start of the league year. We can cut ties with no penalty, if he’s healthy.

It was one of the things I liked about trading KB last year. He had already crumpled to the ground a couple times in the seasons first half. If he tore his ACL again, we would have been stuck with him plus he would be far from the player he was. He took a shot to the knee after the trade which I thought had done it. It looked awful. I couldn’t help but think that we got out just in time. Thankfully he was OK.
