Searcy for Coleman isn't a wash. Who the hell is Searcy? Coleman was a veteran that might have fallen off in coverage, but was still a presence. Depending on a third round hybrid safety to "eventually" be our starter is going to cost us games. There needs to be a veteran brought in before camp to learn the system. Our corners being servicable, that would be one, Bradberry. I don't trust Cockrell. That Giants defense was awful. Maybe Jackson steps up, but Michael Thomas, Julio and Evans will tower over him. I fear Jackson is another Captain, except we spent a 2nd on him and not a 7th.

Coleman was absolutely trash last year.  If you've never heard of Searcy then I don't think you should be posting on secondary threads.  While I agree it is our worst defensive position group, our DB's will not be worse than last year

We were second in the NFL in sacks last year and our secondary still struggled mightily. If we actually had a secondary that could cover at all we would’ve led the NFL in sacks.

They also blitzed heavily. But yes the secondary is a weak spot for sure

I wish folks would do a little homework before sounding off about out DBs. First of all Mike Adams was a probowler in 2014 and 2015 so while he is 37 he reminds me of Davis who is still playing at a high level late in his career. And honestly I expect Gaulden to spell Adams as much as Searcy.

Secondly Cockrell (81) had better PFF numbers than both Worley or Bradberry (41)by a large margin. Here is an article written in March about possible breakout free agents.

Searcy has started 57 games for 2 different teams. He is good but not spectacular. For the price he is a good value.

Do we have a great secondary? Likely not. Are we better than last year. It will be hard not to be.

PFF grades have about as much relevance as Madden ratings. Cockrell sat on the sidelines in free agency with little action forever until we came along and offered him a relatively small short term contract. Pro Bowl voting is a popularity contest as much as anything and Father Time can catch up to a player seemingly overnight. Adams was serviceable last year but even that was enough to qualify as being the best DB on our team.

Our secondary was atrocious last year. If they can simply be below average this year it would be a significant improvement. Surely Cockrell and Searcy can’t be any worse than Worley and Coleman were last year and hopefully Bradberry and Captain will jerk their heads out of their asses and play like we know they can. Maybe Jackson can be an earlier contributor than I’m expecting. I honestly think he may pretty much need a redshirt year.

I think you will find that our secondary will be pretty good this year. It will be a mixture of a better scheme and more man press coverage, less gambling and more gang tackling playing opportunistic ball as everyone is once again all in. The secondary needs communication, leadership and atleticism. Something this group may be able to develop by season start.

I hope so. I could see it being pretty good if everything I’m hoping for actually comes together. We know Bradberry can be a capable starting outside CB. We know Adams can be serviceable. Same with Searcy. We know Captain can be a good nickel. We know that Cockrell surely should be at least some upgrade over Worley. Getting anything out of Jackson and Gaulden as rookies would just be icing on the cake IMO. I think both can ultimately become good players I’m just not sure if they’re going to be ready to make significant contributions as rookies.

Sorry but Bradberry will be starting lol.

That remains to be determined in camp. Bradberry was poor last year and surely knows his spot is far from assured. Hurney has no loyalty to Bradberry given he didn't draft him and already dumped his buddy Worley.

It's looking like Searcy, a practice squad player, is going to beat out Cockrell. Maybe it's a good thing, maybe it's not. If our first team gets torched in preseason, we can only hope they learn enough to get torched less against dallas. Thank god they only have Hurns and that's a matchup that Jackson can do b/c Hurns is short.

Maybe you meant Seymour but he has never been on a practice squad.
