Even being an NC State fan, I wouldn't want the Panthers to load up on State players that weren't worthy of NFL roster spots. I am not hating on Hood because he is from UNC, he just simply isn't an NFL caliber player.

Similarly, guys like Reggie Bonnafon are unlikely to be anything more than practice squad or training camp bodies. Fans get too caught up in a lot of these late round picks and UDFAs. The overwhelming majority of them are not going to pan out.

Unlikely yes. But ok we just got excited signing a FA running back who went undrafted. You never know.

Personally, I am more interested in our free agent pick ups and our top 5 round draft picks. We are much more likely to see those guys the next 2-3 seasons than we are from the UDFA, rookie camp signings or 6th-7th round picks.

Hopefully we do find another unheralded gem. We have done it before. But the Huddle tends to go a little overboard with it's practice squad crushes.

It was the same with Clemson fans last year and the LB(Boulware) who was CLEARLY not an NFL caliber player.

That is the #1 problem with college sports fans, they can't take off the homer glasses at the next level.

and Gamecock fans with Dameire Byrd in 2015 (self-incriminating with this one, tbh)

though to his credit, he has since proven he deserves a roster spot.

as to the OP, truth be told, KR/PR is gonna be a real battle this year: Byrd, Barner, Samuel? oo wee mayne. Not to mention Moore, Duke, Ross, Jackson, and CMC who wont be front runners for various reasons but could certainly burn a coverage team in a heartbeat.

The infatuation with Hood is just a bunch of overly excited UNC fans not seeing the obvious. Not every good college player translates to the NFL.

I bet most rooting for Hood was doing so because he is a local Charlotte kid who went to Charlotte Catholic...not his ties to UNC.

at least that was who o was hoping he made it...but he is a very, very long shot.

Yeah, Hood looks like a reach to make the practice squad unless he figures out how to catch and hang on to the ball.

I think it’s unfair to get an early judgement on hood when they are still basically not doing much contact. That is where he thrives and is at his best. He was brought in to run between the tackles. He doesn’t have to be all world with his hands, I don’t think we threw the ball to stew that much which probably was a sign that’s wasnt his strength either. Not that Stew was just terrible at catching the ball. It just wasn’t his strongest aspect.

If he is struggling to catch the ball without contact, I am not envisioning a scenario where he is better WITH contact.

Barner is OK, not great as a returner. A smaller career number of returns but Byrd last year had a better return year than Barner has ever had. With CMC and the WRs we have, the return game is fine regardless of Barner. This should solely be based on the RB position.

Also, I’m ignoring Donte Jackson who returned kicks at LSU (had a TD called back one game).

I don't personally think much of either Barner or CAP but I would rather roll with a guy that can fill in for KR/PR duties if need be. I would really like to NEVER see CMC return the ball, his usage rate is going to be high enough anyway.

Turners backs typically catch passes. If he is going to be a backup then he needs to be serviceable in that regard.

I mean how well does cap catch the ball? some players are just role players... there is a way he can be called apon even if its just goalline duty.

I don't think there is any reason to keep a one-trick pony on an NFL roster unless that trick is really, really, really good. The bottom line is that Hood is not an NFL caliber player.
