Julio Jones holding out

So apparently, Jones has become friends with Terrell Owens, and that friendship is making the Falcons "uneasy" (PFT)

and the thread on their board about it just got locked.  I think Julio is incredible, but I don't have much sympathy for him in this situation.  What's surprising is how much vitriol their fans have about this.

I understand their feelings, but they have threads about trading him, etc.   It's already an ugly off season for the Falcons.

More on Jones and Owens...

Quote

Of course, the Falcons aren’t concerned about T. and Julio down by the schoolyard because of the positive influence Owens could have on Jones. The Falcons are concerned because T.O. quite possibly has made Jones aware of the extent to which he’s underpaid.

Of course, the notion that the Falcons are uneasy about the T.O./Jones relationship could be recharacterized as Jones being uneasy about the perception that the team isn’t giving him fair compensation for the services he’s providing. The end result is an impasse that may or may not result in a holdout for one of the best receivers in the NFL, forcing the Falcons to consider making alterations to a contract with three years remaining on it.

Falcons have good reason to fear Jones / Owens friendship

Atlanta is missing out on a chance to institute incentive based contracting using Julio as the example. Only pay Julio more if he earns it. Nothing guaranteed over his base salary. And tell him he can earn the incentives as long as he performs. If he meets all the benchmarks like winning the Super Bowl he gets a bonus above and beyond Super Bowl payout. Tell the rest of the team if they become a probowler and feel they are underpaid you will give them an incentive clause in their contract.

This is what should have been done to begin with. These contracts now a days are BEYOND ridiculous. No one deserves the kind of money these contracts pull, just for playing a game. Incentive laden contracts with guaranteed base levels to get men what they deserve/need vs large contracts most teams will end up jettisoning or voiding when a player isn’t good enough anymore or gets hurt just makes more sense.

Meanwhile, Brandin Cooks just re-signed for 5 years, $80M.

These WR contracts are out of control. Another solid season and it'll probably cost $12M+ to keep Funchess. If he blows up this season, he'll get a mega-deal from someone. I honestly think this will be his last season in Charlotte. I don't think it's wise to pay decent WRs $10M+ per season and if he has 1000+ yards, someone will probably be willing to pay considerably more than that.

When left guards are getting over 13 million a year WR contracts aren't that crazy.

Funchess was and has always been in the plan going forward. I forgot what thread it was months ago but I touched on that funchess would get a contract that people didn't like but it wouldn't be top flight wr money.

He's trending up and just as young as cooks is, he's getting paid and it will more than likely be from us. And like I said back then no other wr option on the team will threaten funchess to NOT get paid. Even if DJ has an all world rookie season hes still on a cheap rookie deal. Is what it is at the end of the day.
