How will the 48 work? 24 teams qualify for knock out with the top 8 getting a bye? I'm good with 48 but I don't think concacaf deserves more than 4 teams.  Same with southeast Asia or whatever that group is.

As I understand it...
-Bids per confederation: UEFA (16), CAF (9.5), AFC (8.5), COMNEBOL (6.5), CONCACAF (6.5), OFC (1.5)
-There is no slot reserved for the host anymore, the host(s) slot will be taken from their confederation’s allocation
-There will be a six team playoff to determine the final two slots.  The competitors will be the highest non-qualified team from each confederation (outside of UEFA) along with the next highest non-qualified team from the host confederation
-Sixteen three team groups (each group will obviously have a UEFA team)
-Only two group stage games per team with top two teams advancing to the all new Round of 32
-Rest of the tournament proceeds like normal

I like the playoff idea and the fact that the host confederation does not automatically get an extra bid but outside of that I am not a fan.  For one thing, all that drama in the Iran/Portugal and Spain/Morocco dueling games are now eliminated because there are only three teams per group.  Those are usually the best games when other results matter.  Now we will have more games like today’s France/Denmark game where the two teams went out and bleeped around while those that paid good money for the tickets got screwed.

I would prefer twelve four team groups with the top two advancing where the top eight first place finishers get a bye to the Ro16 while the bottom four and all second place teams have to play a game earlier.  It would actually improve the final group stage game because Denmark would not have been content with a draw while France would have more to play for knowing a win guarantees a bye.

The amount of bids CONCACAF, AFC, and CAF were allocated is crazy.  I just peaked at the ELO system they are using for the rankings now.  Ecuador just fell from 20th to 28th in the World.  They finished eighth in CONMEBOL so still would no get in.  Yet the eighth or ninth best teams from Asia and Africa will?  Is Uzbekistan making the World Cup at Ecuador’s expense really in the interest of the competition?

They are changing to 48 teams. We were just giving a suggestion to a better way it could be done........

Yeah, I think he is confused as to what we are talking about.  FIFA is ruining what is not broke, we are trying to limit the damage.

Germany just wasn't good enough...hard to believe on paper they don't take this group.  Good for Mexico, they deserve it.

Honestly after their performance today I wish the second slot from this group could go to Nigeria or Iran

Belgium has been the best team so far. I still want to see more from England. Don’t believe in them just yet

Agree on both accounts, although to be fair they have played the same weak opponents.  Too bad they did not meet earlier where more was at stake.  I suspect we will not learn the full extent to either’s talent until the QF

Both England and Belgium are in a good spot regardless of the result tomorrow although you would want to avoid Columbia IF they even go through.  If I am Belgium I want the 2 spot in G.  Avoid Brazil next round.  Will be a great knockout stage.

Looking at the round of 16 I think Croatia has a major shot at winning this whole thing.   Another sleeper right now is Switzerland/Sweden winner.
