Interesting info about Panthers roster

Recommended Posts

For a variety of reasons, some teams have more undrafted players on their roster than others. The Jacksonville Jaguars led the league with 23 such players at the start of 2017, followed by the Saints and Chargers with 20 apiece.

Draft and develop

The mark of a good front office is the ability to draft and develop players within the system. That means drafting well and holding on to those players. Consider that the Carolina Panthers led the league with 12 first-round draft picks on their 2017 roster. Only two of them came from other teams.

Teams With Most First-Rounders On The Roster

Carolina Panthers 12
Pittsburgh Steelers 11
Oakland Raiders 11
Arizona Cardinals 11
New Orleans Saints 10
Philadelphia Eagles 10
Houston Texans 10
Atlanta Falcons 10

1st rounders still on roster is such an arbitrary stat when you stop and think about it. It means next to nothing if the player sucks.

What I'm more interested in is total All-Pro's currently on a roster. All-pros can be found in any round (AB, Sherman, Smitty, etc.). Just because you're a first rounder doesn't mean you're any good.

Total all-pros would better determine team scouting abilities, at least to me.

I'm interested in winning games to judge a roster.  Though an even better measure is winning games with roster made up of mid and late round draft picks. That means you can scout and draft and have flexibility to pay for a nice FA when the fit and timing is right.

Could be arbitrary, but hard to argue with the strength of the teams on that list, though. With the exceptions of the Raiders, every team on that list has been in the playoffs multiple times, or had multiple winning records, over the past 5 years.

Having an undrafted player on the roster can mean you've done a good job of recognizing hidden talent and developing it, or you've done a bad job with your drafting, trading, etc., and you've had to settle for lesser talent.

Having a lot of 1st rounders can mean you've done a good job of drafting (and keeping) your 1st rounders, or it can mean you finish in the basement every season and therefore gain access to the best draft talent every year and your team is still a loser.
