A bounce back year for him?????

Recommended Posts

Just read this and it made me chuckle.  This was an article on how Colin Jones is due for a bounce back year.  That would have to suggest that he was good at some point to have a bounce back.  He is like the Amini of defense in RR eyes.  I would much rather go with D. Cox or Searcy than him.

Colin Jones

Jones not only needs to bounce back, he needs to have a big year in 2018. Last season, Jones recorded 23 tackles and an interception that was returned 10 yards. His best game of the season came on October 8 against the Detroit Lions when he recorded five tackles in a nailbiting 27-24 victory.

Jones is projected as the starting free safety for the team per the most recent depth chart from OurLads.com.

Jones has a big responsibility as he will probably have to replace Kurt Coleman who left for the New Orleans Saints in the offseason. Although the release of Coleman on the part of the Panthers was a move to get younger, it still leaves a hole in the defense.

This is where Jones among others will have to live by the “next man up” mentality. It will be interesting to see how he does in training camp. During that time, he should focus on making sure he knows the playbook so that he can focus on becoming a leader for the defense.

Sometimes writers make it painfully obvious that they're just talking out of their ass. Searcy was signed to replace Coleman. No, I'm not excited about it. Yes, I expect our safeties to be a liability once again. But, in the words of our former coach John Fox, "It is what it is."

Searcy is a capable safety. He will be much better than Coleman was last year. Adams and Searcy aren’t great (probably below average), but are veterans who should be where they need to be on defense. I’m just glad we actually have a safety with potential in Gaulden. He might need a while to learn the position better, but he played great for UT.

I like Colin Jones...

He can hit. He is fast. He is a decent blitzer (probably his best use imo). But he is a situational/ST player. He should not be used in coverage and he is overrated by Rivera. I don’t get the hate on him, I just think Rivera doesn’t use him to his strengths and forces him into too much playing time due to his ‘hard nose football player’ personality. Seems to me this is more of a Rivera/coaching issue really. History will support that theory.

Safeties are the 10th and 11th most important players on your defense.

Maybe 12th if you have a good nickel.

Quit freaking out.

Tell that to Seattle when they had the Legion of Boom, or the Ravens when they had Ed Reed, or the Steelers with Polamalu, or the Eagles with Brian Dawkins, or to any of these teams that have drafted safeties in the 1st round in recent years.

He’s a special teamer who should only be seeing the field on defense if we find ourselves in a pinch with injuries.

I really think in the right blitzing plays, Jones is a good option. It’s hard to just because without playing time outside of said plays, you can’t disguise it as well so I’d tend to agree.

Still with with said there are much more useless players on the team.
