Which are you more worried about Offense or Defense?

Recommended Posts

I will play the contrarian.  I think the secondary will be better than advertised.  Here is why:

Cockrell is not a star, but he is solid.

Bradberry had a bad year.  But there was a reason for it.  There are 2 reasons we will be better:  1) He was locked onto better athletes a lot, since Worley was our soft zone safety valve corner.  This year, he will  not be facing the #1 WRs.  Imagine the drop off between most #1 and #2 wr.  2) We should not blitz as much.  Last year, we blitzed Munnerlyn a lot--why not? He sucked in coverage.

Seymour is going to surprise some folks.  He is fast and can lock up on a wr.  He was a 4.39 combine guy and he is young, just developing.

Let's not forget, We get Action Jackson and Corn Elder this year.  Both should be upgrades over Munnerlyn, who will be a June 1 cut, I think.

At S, I expect Gaulden will be ready to take on a bigger role around mid season.  However, they really like D. Cox.  That is why we have not gone after a free agent S and probably a key reason we passed over a few safeties.

You don't always need to overhaul a unit after a bad season--we were the second most blitz happy team in the league--who is that going to expose?  Balance.

Still worried about the offense until they prove me wrong. Left side of the O-line is garbage and not sure if we will have a running game again this season.

If we stay healthy on the defensive side of the ball, I think we are mediocre safeties away (hopefully Searcy and Adams can suffice) from having a top 5 defense.

Gotta be defensive end.

I love Julius, but at this point in his career he shouldn't be starting. Addison is a quality starter.

Injury at the position would derail the defense, and fast. Especially with the fact we only have one true starter.

We are depending on young guys to step up, but the reality is none of them should be starting.

Please don't mention Horton, because he's also a rotational guy.

They can’t be less effective than Johnson has been the last couple years can they when we depended on him?

Damn The Huddle has become one pessimistic place,

My initial reaction was that I am actually excited to see what we can do on both sides of the ball.

I am not "gloom and doom" because our secondary struggled last year.  Blitzing does that--if it did not, they would blitz every play.  We nearly doubled the amount of blitzing from 2016 to 2017.  Bradberry's production dropped, as it should.  Now people want him gone.

They don't know how to win and they don't know how to lose.  Other than that, all is well.

Defense. New coordinator(better? worse?), overhauled secondary, thin on DL. There are a lot of unknowns that could end up being major problems.

It's a tough call though, because our very underwhelming OL is likely to take a step backwards and we have no backup QB as of yet. But I feel better about our upgraded WR corps, new OC and new big back(Anderson).

Overall I just feel more optimistic about the offense as a whole and I am worried about the defense.

Our DL is better than last year’s.  We got rid of a guy in C.J. that delivered absolutely nothing fit several years and upgraded at the DT position.

Both units are an injury away from mediocrity. I worry about the defense more though, particularly at defensive end. We are banking a lot on JP being effective at his age and on Hall emerging.

With 53 man rosters, you can almost say that with any unit for all NFL teams. The teams that stay healthy and have positive turnover margins will almost always be the teams with the best records.
