You have numbers to back your first paragraph up?

I don't know how many polls have been done, but a quick Google search came up with this: (from September 26th, 2017)

"The first poll of NFL fans following this weekend's moves by dozens of players to take a protest knee during the playing of the National Anthem finds that most want the pros to stand and they are also turning off the games as a result of politics.

The survey from Remington Research Group found that 64 percent want players to stand for the national anthem.

Of the 51 percent who have watched less football this season, 69 percent cite player protests as the reason.

And 60 percent believe that players should find another place to protest the flag, President Trump, race, and other issues.

"Americans are very clear on this issue: they do not support political protests during the national anthem," said Titus Bond, director of Remington Research Group. "On top of that, due to the protests, Americans are watching less football and that trend will continue as long as the protests do."

The group also did a poll of western New York fans of the first place Buffalo Bills and found they agree with Trump and want their team to just play ball and not politics.

According to a new poll taken after the Bills beat the Denver Broncos 26-16:
  • 71% are against player protests during the National Anthem.
  • Nearly half are watching less football mainly because of political protests.
  • More voters agree with Trump's ‘You're Fired' statements than disagree.
  • 82% want less politics during sporting events.
  • 55% tailback LeSean McCoy punished for stretching Sunday's playing of the national anthem."

Cool dude - a far right wing polling group found a bunch of western new york trump fans.

50% would watch less...LMFAO.

Jeff Roe (Remington Research group) is a far right political hack and a well known one.

will this new safe space anthem policy satisfy the delicate snowflakes who break down when they see black men not doing as they're told?

No. Next they want them to cut their dreds and not date white women.

This is another example of the NFL not handling this properly. Players Association will certainly bite back after this, creating, once again more unnecessary controversy.  NFL is bending over backwards to appease two very small angry mobs. Angry mob #1 is the NFL owners, almost all if not all of them vote republican. Angry Mob #2 is the snowflake, fake Captain Americas that probably don’t even know the words to the national anthem. They are mad that a black man is doing more than dancing and entertaining them. How dare a black man have exercise his freedom of speech.

The common theme? Both angry mobs are made up of white males. Hmmmmmm

Thanks for the Con Law lesson, guy. NC attorney here, nice to meet you.

My point wan't the fact that the NFL doesn't have the right to restrict speech (they do), it's that their prior restraint is obviously going to blow up in their faces when the inevitable fan/player backlash happens.

Have a nice day.

This is a good post. In your professional opinion, what do you think of the policy the NFL just passed?

I am not an attorney, but it certainly appears it violates some sort of workplace law and legal ramifications aside, this was probably one of the worst things the NFL could have done if it simply wants the protests to go away regardless if you support the players or not.

It is sad that this has become a political issue.. putting a stop to innocent, dead American bodies laying in the streets seems like a pretty simple issue Every American can get behind..

until you mention they are black and brown bodies shot down by the bodies wrapped in blue..

Is the NFL intentionally trying to fug itself this off-season? This is the second super ambiguous guaranteed to cause controversy major policy they've rolled out this off-season. First the new "leading with the helmet" rule and now this. Of all the decisions they could've made regarding this anthem issue, this has to be among thw worst of the available options.

So there is no in game penalty if a player does not stand? Only a “fine” or league discipline?

POLICY STATEMENT

The 32 member clubs of the National Football League have reaffirmed their strong commitment to work alongside our players to strengthen our communities and advance social justice. The unique platform that we have created is unprecedented in its scope, and will provide extraordinary resources in support of programs to promote positive social change in our communities.

The membership also strongly believes that:

1. All team and league personnel on the field shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

2.The Game Operations Manual will be revised to remove the requirement that all players be on the field for the Anthem.

3. Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the Anthem has been performed.

4. A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

5. Each club may develop its own work rules, consistent with the above principles, regarding its personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

6. The Commissioner will impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

It seems the NFL is punishing the team itself instead of the player involved to circumvent the NFLPA to have any say in the matter.  I'm not a lawyer but it also seems that it would have to be the team itself to dispute a fine since the player who kneels is not actually punished but the team the player plays for.
