Possible changes to anthem guidelines

Keep all players in the locker room until the anthem ends. Then, player introductions. Like it used to be done.

I’m dead serious. The NFL and its players clearly have no idea how to handle a :60 song.

For sure on the team rulings. I’ve always felt to end the matter entirely, just have them wait in the locker room like they used to. I know I’ve said that a few times, but it really would end the conversation.

Unless the Players Association objects.

The guys that are protesting want to be seen. Keeping them in the locker room prevents that.

They could choose a different time, of course.

Makes sense. I agree with you on another time, surely they could use their platform outside of the game to raise awareness to a cause they are supporting. What about post game press conferences?

Seriously why does it matter if a few people don't participate? Never seen why it's such a big deal. Do your own thing. You can't force admiration and respect, especially for some song and piece of cloth. Don't try and enforce it or your no better than north Korea.

It’s a big deal now because the discussion has evolved into something different - and you and I both know what that is. Some of which has been stirred up deliberately by the President.

People who want sports separate from society or separate from their POV aren’t being logical and quite frankly are being irrational. Sports are a microcosm of society. Those same people who don’t want politics in sports are the same people who wouldn’t have a problem with it as long as they agreed with the message of the protests or nature of the discussion. Sad!

@4Corners I work in a building with offices, we are not allowed to have anything political on our desk, on the wall, even on our cars. Of course, some people get buy with it. When the workers protest, thet protest across the street... not allowed on property. Its called the Hatch act.

I love the anthem before every game...and the honor it bestows on extraordinary human beings that sacrificed. If anyone wants to kneel let them, it really doesnt change sht.. its a cheap grab for 'look at me' by most... they can put up their millions to make a difference if they're serious ...if that happened everyone would stand...what has actually come of someone kneeling...nothing but a new ***** rule by the NFL..

You've described the majority of just about every demographic.

The NFL sells a product intended to allow fans to live vicariously through the players/team.  When it works as designed, fans are able to escape the drudgery/problems of their otherwise ordinary lives.

Players that fail to honor the flag undermine the illusion before the game even begins.

Flip it over though.

If a load of players were holding anti-abortion protests with graphic pictures held up during games, would you want to see that?

The Anthem isnt political, but ok!!

Have you read the original lyrics?

Also, the issue goes hand in hand with honoring/not honoring the American flag.

That has been a political issue for as long as I've been alive (a long time).

It has been debated in the halls of congress and by the USSC.

It really doesn't get much more political than that.

Of course not!

That is my point.

Why do people go to football games?

To see a football game, not to get caught up in political agendas.

As an aside, am I the only one who finds it ironic that this discussion involves a league that for the last several years restricted players from celebrating touchdowns?

This is not true at all. There has been quite a bit gained by the players kneeling. If you choose to ignore that, that’s on you.

As for this topic, I’ve said what I had to say so won’t be no back and forth from me. I will keep a close on eye on this and react accordingly. The league won’t put in a rule to stop the kneeling, but if they do, that won’t stop no show.

    • Based on the NHL cap today ($88M), the Canes have $22.9M in projected space going into the 25-26 season. Seems to be a consensus the cap will increase to $92.5M next season, but let's not assume. The core of this team is locked up for a couple more years, with the only UFAs at the end of this season: Roslovic, Fast, Robinson, Jost, with Orlov and Burns on D. Remember Seth Jarvis's contract? Remember the press it got because the Canes found a loophole that allowed them to get his contract under the cap by using "deferred salary?" Yeah, don't expect that won't be addressed by the league and that loophole closed. That being said, if the Canes decide to sign Necas long term, they should do it next season and they'll probably need to pay him Aho level money- close to $10M a year. Let's assume the team gets through the season without any career or long term injury concerns. And, let's be honest in the conversation. Does Jesper Fast have a place on this team right now or have we found the right combination on the ice that he may not be needed?  Does Brent Burns retire, or will he decide to stay another year? If so, there's a 1-year thank you for your service $6M deal.  If Roslovic shows out this year, that's gonna be a pretty big contract compared to the 1-year, $2.8M he's getting now. He may command around $4.5 - 5M to stay. So, those 2 guys are gonna cost you $11M. Get Necas a new deal at $10M, you're up to $14.5M of the $22.9M in space. So you've got about $8.4M to work in Orlov and Robinson, which is do-able. Plenty of room to work deals and keep every one of the UFAs if the Canes so desire.
    • Dan is doing a fine job, however, I'm not sold on Canales. I think he needs to give up play-calling duties, but I also realize that this wasn't an easy fix.
