5 REASONS WHY WE LOST TO THE SAINTS

after re watching a couple of our games vs the saints last season this is the problems i see.

#1. zone defense - brees and paytons offense shreds our zone defense like its nothing with their quick pass scheme and that opens up their run game and also opens their vertical attack which they killed us with in all 3 games

#2 missed tackles -  missed tackles was also a big issue for us vs the saints . There was plays where we could have gave them a 2-4 yard gain but a missed tackle gave them a huge gain and first downs and even touchdowns .missed tackles is one thing we need to improve if we plan on stopping the saints , i also watched the rams vs the saints and i noticed that they were way better tackling wise and that helped out big time , they also played a lot of man coverage as well.

#3 mistakes- mistakes was a big issue here as well , fore example matt kalil blowing his assignment in the first game that resulted in a cam jordan sack on a key 3rd down in the red zone, blown coverages and turnovers . if you look at every game other then the playoff game we lost the turnover battle . i remember in week 13 we botched a punt giving them field position inside the 20

#4 -conservative offense -  this is a problem i will blame on shula and hope it gets fixed under norv turner , you cant play conservative and scared vs a power house offense , we need to shoot out with them and not only rely on our defense, we need to score touchdowns.

#5 lack of weapons vs their strengths- our biggest weakness was our dbs and receivers and the saints strengths was their corners and their passing attack which resulted in big problems for us.

CONCLUSION :  I think we are much better prepared now due to our off season , we got better in the secoundary  and better on offense with cj anderson , dj moore torrey smith a possibly jarius wright.

The missed tackles really stood out to me. Two in particular-Shaq on the goal line and Kurt in the backfield both on Kamara.

I would add that the huge chunk plays killed us as they would anyone.

I feel like they executed their plan well against us, but we were stale and uncompetitive. The only other game I really remember seeing that attitude all season was the Bears.

Except that we shut down the NO run game in the second match up. Trouble is that exposes our secondary. Our run D was supposed to be our strength so that shouldn’t be our biggest weakness. That suggests to me even accepting that our NFCS opponents are very strong in this department that we can and should do better. Sure the run sets up the pass but it just looked too easy in contrast to other games.

Our secondary is not that much better, and our O-line and is worse. Our passing game should be much improved though.

Either way each game was different, the first game we lost KB to injury and Cam and our offense played like garbage. The second game Kamara had a good game, plus drop passes and special teams mistakes cost us, and everyone remembers the playoffs.

If Shaq hit Mccaffrey like that he would go flying 5 yards into the stands, that was just great balance by Kamara.

Panthers offense didn't have the consistent run game to give our defense adequate rest.

Too many 3 and outs and TOs

Receivers were the problem. Funchess was our best actual WR and he was hurt. If we had Byrd and/or Samuel for that playoff game, I think we would have won. Too many missed opportunities in that game. Our defense did well enough for us to win, and so did Cam. Our problem is getting in the end zone.

In the 3rd game, our practice squad receiving core allowed the Saints to play one dimensional run stuffing football. Even when the PS players were open they dropped the ball.

The one thing that everyone is missing that will change this year is the targeting of Star L. for the Saint’s running game.  I think Poe will be a dramatic upgrade this year.

This is a great video on that matchup. And while this guy was predicting an upset in playoffs, he should have taken into account our PS receivers.  This year will be different.

Whether our O-line is worse remains to be seen. Overall, I think that if it is that much worse, I think that Turner will better be able to scheme around a weakness.

I absolutely and unequivocally believe that our secondary is that much better. Some of y'all obviously don't realize just how bad we were and have obviously never seen Cockrell or Searcy play. And this is not to say that the secondary will be all-world, but that it will at least be a believable NFL unit.

I agree. IF we had Byrd we win that game. He grabs the TD that Clay dropped for sure.

The Panthers came to play that third game though. They had too many flaws but they overachieved and kept the game competitive until the end.

But I agree with you. With Byrd and Samuel in the line up the offense would have worked as designed. They were the missing pieces of the offense.

Thanks to Hurney for stacking the WR core so hopefully we don't have this issue anymore.

We fielded probably the worst team in 5 year last year. Dave did nothing to up grade the team and it showed with NO steam rolling us because they drafted to beat us. This year hopefully we will have a better DC along with a upgraded offense in almost every way. So we should fair better against our south rivals.

That was incredible, easily one of the best analysis videos I’ve seen, confirms to me though that both Atlanta and New Orleans have been giving us trouble with zone blocking centres out maneuveing star for the last couple of years. Slightly annoying that we couldn’t squeeze that last game out the bag but was entertaining watching the Saints fail so miserably in Minnesota.

thanks for posting this vid.
