Hurney is safe, so if you think they'd fire Rivera and Promote from within for the HC spot.

but both are safe. dont expect either one to be fired unless this coming season is 2-14 and then Hurney will be looking for a new coach.

Lol... Hurney is a dead man walking.  Prepare yourself.

Hurney never questioned Mr. Richardson about personal decisions he said to him about players.  his loyalty is to be praised .  It probably cost Gettleman his job . We may never know how much was Hurney and how much was Richardson .  This year is mostly Hurney and Rivera .  Lets see how this works out before giving a grade .

if you think so. it be real expensive to fire him and Rivera. Talking over 35-40m in buyouts. Might as well let them stay and earn another contract extension.

Rivera will finish out the season but after that his future here is uncertain.

Hurneys contract is nothing more than the equivalent of an expensive meal to Tepper.  He wipes his ass with $100 bills.

That's assuming they actually do earn a contract extension.

That's far from guaranteed, but I'd bet on Rivera earning that before I would Hurney.

After this coming season they would have one year left each. Why I dont expect either to get fired at least till after the season, probably not even then.

You are thinking like JR who didn't want to buy out a coaches contact.  Tepper is nothing like JR.

No I'm thinking like the Steelers, they very rarely fire staff or coaches. They've had 7 GM's, two of which are Rooneys. The other five have on average been the GM for 13.2 years. Even when the team has gone 2-12, they've been more inclined to fire coaches then Front office staff.

But you forgot one very important fact in all of this, Tepper did not hire anyone currently on staff.  He has no obligation to keep anyone for continuity's sake.   This is his chance to set up his team they way he wants it from the jump.  He doesn't have to or need to see how these folks do this season to determine if he keeps them or not.  The coaching staff is safe only because it's too late into the new year to replace them.  The FO and scouts however can be replaced at any moment.

The Steelers also tend to hire people who are very good at what they do. Any claim that Marty Hurney fits that description is a pretty big stretch, given his record.

I do believe that current people will be kept during the transition for the sake of stability. I don't buy that they'll be kept beyond that if they don't show they're worth it.

If we do have a bad season and it comes down to a decision between Rivera and Hurney, I'd point out that Rivera had his most successful years with someone else at GM.

Look at the Steelers in the 40's, 50's, and 60's before Knoll was hired. They hired mediocre coaches all the time but kept them around because of loyalty. They've done it recently as well. Very similar to the Panthers just more success.

That's largely because back in the 70s, the Steelers built the best scouting and personnel system in the league. And they've got an extremely capable guy running it in Kevin Colbert.

Those are not advantages that the Panthers can currently lay claim to. And if they want to get to that point, it's not going to happen under Marty Hurney.
