Panthers Owner David Tepper Wants The 'Steeler' Approach In Carolina

I like it--we never seemed to have a philosophy.  Pittsburgh is (historically) not afraid to walk away from a player wanting a new contract but, statistically, at the end of his elite status.  The Steelers build an offensive line, get a good QB, a good RB, and they usually are pretty solid at WR.  Defensively, they like to pressure the passer.

Not so different, really.  However, they do not hold onto players too long.  Look at Barry Foster, Kevin Greene, etc.  Marty has these emotional attachments to players because he wants so badly to be valid.   Ryan Kalil is the perfect example. Was he approached about a reduced salary?  Did they ever  consider cutting him?   Is he worth $700K per game when he has played 14 games in 2 years?

I’m excited to see some positive changes. Fowler’s column the other day spoke to much of this. (Ring of honor, midfield logo, etc).

Id like to see banners hung somewhere inside BOA to commemorate our 2 NFC titles and 6 divisional titles. Never understood that.

I’d be shocked if an indoor practice facility wasn’t built soon. Perhaps off campus a bit, or maybe in the same spot.

Steelers and patriots are consistently great teams. I wouldn’t mind us copying either one. Steelers have a tough division yet usually are at the top every year. The patriots are always in the top of the NFL but have had a weak division for over 10 years.

The Steelers have had 3 coaches since the 1970's.  That's continuity.  Knox (god rest his soul), Landry, Shula, and a couple others were with their team for many years and won Super Bowls.  I would say though we haven't won the Super Bowl yet it is important to have someone competent at the helm.  While many dislike Rivera for numerous reasons he is a solid coach.

Every time a team changes a coach everything changes.  Offensive Style, Defensive style.  This requires certain players.   If you are constantly switching coaching staff you are never going to reach the Super Bowl.

Being smart with player contracts and not being held hostage to them is smart business.

If you are going to model your franchise against any franchise in the NFL.  You can't argue too much over Pittsburgh.

Knox was with the Rams in the 70s. The Steeler coach you're thinking of is Chuck Noll.

Considering the Steelers have the most super bowl trophies and have won 2 "recently", I'm actually ok with this.  I think they've proven the method can work, I'm all for it.

Your idea of recently is ten years ago? That franchise overpays aging players and tries to build through the draft. The AFC is garbage and part of that problem is them. I fuging hate the steelers and their fanbased. The absolute worst in sports. I don't see how this is news b/c JR wanted this franchise to be the steelers as well. I was hoping to get out of that mantra.

Good post.  I wonder what Tepper thinks of Rivera if he wanted Tomlin fired?

JR wanted to emulate the Steelers...but never did.

Let's see what this guy can do.

I'm going to be interested to see what happens in the scouting department.

The media wants you to believe the Steelers have a "TOUGH DIVISION". Reasons they don't.

1. Browns. Twice a year. Almost lost game one last year to them.

2. Bungals. Show me a playoff win. Andy Dalton. IMO Tampa is a better team and would probably accomplish more if they were in this division.

3. Ravens. Flacco. Won a super bowl with a defense, luck, and ray rice. Flacco is overrated AF and it shows now. Ray Rice and their D won them the Super Bowl in 2012. Oh well that and a sabotaged power outage. What a joke.

The AFC is absolute garbage and much like new england, they get at least five free wins a year. Remember when the Red Wings were dominant in hockey than they came to the eastern conference and can't even make the damn playoffs? Well if Pittsburgh went to the NFC, they'd finish 8-8 every damn year. Their fanbase is blindly loyal b/c their daddies would beat them if they tried to pull for everyone else. Why is Pittsburgh the demonstrative city for MANLINESS to prove how much of a MAN someone is or how fat your wife can get? #fugPittsburgh #ByTheWayILikeThePensTho

That division was brutal throughout much of recent history if you were around then. It's eased off the last few years.

I disagree. You can hate the Steelers all you want but the bengals and ravens are constantly making the playoffs. Sure they may have some bad years here and there but overall they are pretty good. Yes the browns do suck there is no argument there.
